Eating pasta
smoking butts
sipping leftover wine
and doing the afterchat
of lovers,

laughing and listening,

pretending i know
what you're talking about
as if i could keep up with
the brilliant one -

hah !!!!!!!!

pretending this won't end,

pretending life/love/art
isn't fragile as
whats happening right before us,

surrounding us as we speak;

look at them baby!

did you see them too?

i stopped after 5,
couldn't watch them fly off anymore.

(counting the falling leaves
in your summer garden
on an autumn afternoon)

I think I would try for 6 or 7 next time
counting helps us measure where we have been and set goals for longer moments..

I like your work babe!!

"pretending life/love/art
isn't fragile"

how true is that?  Life is full of pretending, to the point of such pain sometimes...but it's the pain that reminds me I am still alive.

I love reading you Ms. Inky.

I was visualizing birds flying off of a branch or from the ground...
and then reading it was falling leaves, well,
that certainly put another slant on this entirely.
Meanwhile, I'm trying to NOT count...

Had read this before, without the time to reply right then. Want to say that I know of this kind of melancholy and recognized its intensity in your great poem, dear Michele.

You always offer authenticity and true poetry.

Love,
Margherita

"and doing the afterchat

Jewel of a line. The poem is palpable. I feel it.
