Unrequited

all my prayers
unanswered
and a spell
by a magicfriend
fell to chalk smoke

I listened on the edge of chairs
to every dream you would tell me
revealing the real of you
and you told me of lovers
who you
gave
your heart to
and inside I died a little more
beaches became my wandering ground
and I placed wishes on every grain
in the mixing of you becoming the tide
but you didn’t see me at all
nights tears fell on empty arms
as you gave yourself to others
and I never spoke a word
just the back throat taste of salt
I have such a foolish heart
for it was always you for me
and your love for me
was an empty gulf unreturned
sleep comes now without dreams
I gave up on that notion
air stirs lungs without thought
for how can you breathe
when someone’s name
is only upon your lips
and you are not
quite good enough

just some words cut out
from the diary of my heart

Just yesterday I swore I wouldn't be here doing this...

Then you tore my heart out with:

"when someone’s name
is only upon your lips
and you are not
quite good enough"

and it leaves you feeling like you are never good enough for anyone...like you are somehow...damaged.

Add me to the list of the foolish heart's club.....Helen, as usual your writing is powerful, and I relate to this more that I could describe.

Intellectually I know that Canada is no better than any other country. Emotionally I KNOW that Canada is the best country in the world!

Oh, man...
This is so sad, beautiful, but so sad.

I too have a foolish heart.  Your poem is exquisite and excellent.

Ah, that is one of the most painful feelings in the world...
This is a beautifully bittersweet composition. Thank you for sharing it...

Your words run so deep with emotion...
You know how to crack the coldest heart with your poems and to stop the tide with your thoughts..

I always love to read your poems.
