I Have Found A Friend In You

All I really wanted was a friend to let me down,
someone I could trust to give an open smile
and undermine me when I needed them,
a friend or two who’d show that loving giving spirit
while they robbed my very Peter for their Paul,
good people who knew how to treat themselves well,
who’d nurture me with country fertilizer every time,
take me in and when I was completely taken in,
so thoughtfully they’d shove me out again.
I longed for friends who’d let me be myself
for a payment to be named later naturally;
not many, just a few I knew I could depend upon
always to set me up and knock me down again,
and always, always to not be there when I called.
That’s all gone past now I am happy to relate,
it’s all come true and now I am complete, replete;
that friend of friends I’ve found in you, in you and you,
and most especially of late my friend, in you.

---------------------

Don't take this too seriously  -- if it were about you, you'd know.
It's just a "personal poem," written about someone who I thought
would be a friend, once upon a time....and who in the end,
along with a few (fortunately very few) of his compadres, was not.

Well, Ratleader, I did enjoy the read but, no, I'd rather not have "friends" like that.  Still, nothing is forever in this world and acceptance of that fact should make the let down easier - somehow it doesn't, does it?

Writing such things helps a bit, for those of us in this world who are poets, and so does deciding to learn from the betrayal rather than just be hurt....but not all that much.

On the other hand, if someone's not a poet, they might not feel it as much in the first place.

It is when people are down on their luck, or physcially hurting that the true colors of "friends" often come to play. And some just do not know how to handle problems much less any their "friends" might have. So I forgive and let them go. This in the case of my daughter who found out the friends who depended on her laughter and humor were not there when she was hurting and needed some of that back. She is hurting from their neglect.
Just my experience seeing it through her hurt. best to you, martyjo

Ed~
As honestly as I can ... I would say this ... were one to fall away from the friendship of you ... they would deserve a very hard landing ... at best~

For some reason, while reading this, I was reminded of an old saying of my great grandmother's ... (if I may)

'I am rock ... you are stone
together we cling to the mountain
for if we were to let go
so would the mountain'

I didn't know what she meant when I was young ... but I have learned that the pathway to the mountain of true friendship is indeed made stronger by the 'clinging' of the two~

Make sense ?
Yeah ... I figured it would~
My great grandmother was a wise lady who wrote down sooooo many of her gems of wisdom so that I would always have them at an age where I could not only 'understand' them ... but put them into play in my life~
(and she accused me of being a poet long before I knew what it meant too)
One day ... someday ... I hope to be even half as wise and kind as she was~

*Huglets* dear man of the mountain~

I'm glad people seem not to mind my posting this -- I wasn't going to, since folks here aren't usually comfortable with that kind of thing....but decided what the heck, I wrote it and meant every word, so I may as well. If it did make anyone here turn their back on me, well, the line for that forms on the left.

So thank you, friends who are real....you're showing it right now, by not turning your back when I write of something that both hurt and disappointed me. Together those folks make up 0.000000013% of the world's population....and this thread already has more responses than that!

Dylan Thomas wrote a beautiful poem -- one I've returned to time and time again -- that concludes with these profound lines.

That though I loved them for their faults
As much as for their good,
My friends were enemies on stilts
With their heads in a cunning cloud.

powerful write !

I have heard it said...and have seen it enough to believe its true...

There are no "friends" or "enemies", "family" or "strangers",  Only... Lessons.

Well, Uriah, I used to have a definition of "friend" that went something like this:

"A friend is someone who isn't always mean to you."

I've pretty much gone away from that, but in this case, I'm leaning toward resurrecting it! And after all, when someone actually looks for opportunities to be rude or hurtful toward you, it sinks to just about that level.

Ed,

A friend is someone who is still there once
you are broke...who never leaves your side
and has the courage to sometimes say things
to you that you may not like but are in your
best interest...A friend can be woken from
sleep late in the night...  I am sorry you
have experienced the bitterness of those
who are not what one would continue to
call a friend.

Me too....and the fact of losing them hurts more than what they did to demonstrate it. Could have been, wasn't, and that hurts. I take it personally in that way, name it as being my responsibility somehow, even though I no longer take their affronts personally.

Gosh Ed, by the title, I was about to congratulate you on your special friend.
It's sad when those you considered friends suddenly become villains in your mind. Whether or not they intended you any illwill I have no idea, not knowing the specifics. Hope time and distance can heal, if not, then best to find different friends. I've had to walk away from a few myself. And I'm wondering who walked away from me in the past. Hmmm

I wish it were so, that it were just "in my mind"....but some things cannot be mistaken, some patterns can't be misread. Not villains though, just people who had no compunction about treating me shabbily.

And new friends...oh yes, I'm doing that now. At this very moment, I mean.

So THAT's the sort you seek??? *cheeky grin*

Seriously though... I think we've all encountered at least one person we thought would be there for us... only to have to haul out the superglue and hunt up the pieces of our cracked heart when they showed their true colors... And knowing deep down we're better off without such "friends" doesn't make the hurting one bit less.

As someone who knows what a precious gift your friendship is, I ache that you write those "friends" so clearly for I know your words are drawn from hard experience... but you do write them brilliantly. *S*

And... I'll give Marge a jostle for head of that line forming on the RIGHT... knowing any position there is a true honor. *S*

Laura and Marge....truth is, a person would be lucky to find even one, like either of you. No need to line up, come on in...you've got the run of the place!

Ed

You have been a friend to me.  I even define the word somewhat because of you.  To feel the negative side is part of living, as is moving on past the hurt.  Even though the taste will linger still, the lesson will become more clear with time.  I see you doing that within this thread and it gladdens my heart.  There are not too many people that are forever friends...I count you as one of mine.

Didn't mean to sound like a know it all....I'm not.

If you're not, then there aren't any, Martie.... The light you just gave me, I can only hold up a mirror and shine some of it back to you.
