6th grade boy in a ghost town zoo
where the dogs died from drinking water
my only friend had brown eyes
and black skin and distemper
dad shot him dead but let me hold him
while he dug him a hole in heaven
under the russian cypress tree

the only woman I knew was an 8th grade girl
with granite eyes and a grave stone name
she was asphalt I was gravel then
walking from school she was the wind
laughing at me for playing with myself
but I did anyway because it felt good
and she never could be that handy again

I hear her often now on the hell side of 50
when riding too fast on unknown's hiway
she prefers to run beside my mind
says it is too predictable behind
still laughs at my hands but understands
says someday she will help me with that
and that the engraving will get her off

perhaps tomorrow I will ride a bit faster

asphalt burns and gravel slides
back in time the race that hides

galing winds of jaded notion
tempest tossed, no gentle ocean

A touch different, but with your same touch. As always, wonderful.

Still waters run deep
illusion of quiet repose
but whispered depths
that never sleep is what
your ocean knows
