Searching For The Light

Alone and trembling
in the pale and flickering light.
Surrounded by the darkness
of neverending night.

No comfort in the knowing
that the flames might would soon surrender.
That darkness would invade
this place of fading lights frail splendor.

Looked I out into the night
with eyes of apprehension.
Upon the many lights like mine
far to numerous to mention.

But like the stars up in the sky
that flicker first then fade.
These lights like mine were to weak alone
and darkness did invade.

Their cries fell upon my ears
from a place where angels fear to tread.
I thought I too will soon join their ranks
and my heart was filled with dread.

Before I fall I thought
and darkness becomes my home.
I'll step out into the night
seek light.
Least I should fall without a whimper
in the darkness all alone.

My desperate quest did lead me
frantic too and fro.
As off into the darkness
with but pale light I did go.

I saw one standing near
his light much brighter than mine.
He said come walk with me
he was so very kind.

Though grateful still
for the gesture that he made.
I noticed that in time
his light too began to fade.

Darkness once again
seemed my sure and sad fate.
As anger at my failing light
filled my heart with fear and hate.

Lay down your puny light
I heard a voice from the darkness say.
Give up you fool it said to me
you'll never find your way.

Your not strong enough
your not smart enough
you don't deserve the prize.
Your just another castaway
drifting on my sea of lies.

I had to consider what was said
it was said so many times
and in so many ways.
I thought I might lay down and die,
forever lost in his maze.

But the desperation in his voice
exceeded that of my own.
So I fan the flames of truth
and I carry on.

Let me never surrender,
but hold on with all my might.
And if I should fall in darkness,
let me be searching for the light.

Great write !

Call me odd...but I rejoice at the Light and I embrace the darkness.   Why?

"Whither shall I go from thy spirit?  or whither shall I flee from thy presence?  If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.
If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me;  even the night shall be light about me.
Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day:  The darkness and the light are both alike to thee. ---Psalm 139: 7-12

::smiles::   Its all gravy, baby!  Sometimes with giblets, sometimes not.  Sop it up!

Powerful write.  Saving it.

this was for me, a nice look at both sides of life...warming the heart and following up with the question, if we didn't know darkness intimately, how would we recognize the value of the light?

Wonderful story and write

Dear Steve, you need not search for the Light, for it is within you and it radiates out into the world.

Your poem engaged my rapt attention from beginning to end. A very moving piece of writing.

I have felt the light of you too, Steve....it seems you may have thought you lost it to the dark, but I believe if there is a war between the two, light will always win!!  A meaningful poem, my friend...straight from the gut and heart!

Lovely metre and flow, but the second stanza falters and it's as if there's an extra word in the second line of it.
Cheers

Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind.  Unknown

Steven, I find your words incredibly heartfelt and think of you standing  against the darkness with me ...  my friend.  You may not have seen them, but I felt the feathers!  Thank you for that strength and light.

hugs,
Klassy

We should always carry on...
Their is something mysterious beyond us.
Those who know what I mean should cherish their gift.

Enjoyed the read, Steven.  First we must experience the light and the dark and then we must choose.  If we choose the light then it is always there even if we can't see it - we just have to trust that it is so.

Your mind worked this scenario beautifully...let us never surrender.
Applause.
