Nine Muses

Nine Goddesses I must summon you,
For my own muse has gone astray.
Zeus, Mnemosyne, mother of memory I beg you,
Could you send even one daughter my way.

Calliope, sweet muse of epic poetry
Where is it that you hide,
Clio, talk to be of recorded history
Are really so occupied?

Erato, share your thoughts on love,
Whisper words of romance in my ear.
Euterpe, dear muse of lyric poetry
It’s your double flute I need to hear.

Melpomene, muse of deep tragedy
What of soldiers who die in battle every day?
Polyhymnia, inspire in me some sacred poetry,
For those brave soldiers I will surely pray.

Terpsichore, let us sing and dance
Until our cheekbones ache with grins
So, Thalia and I can amuse you with
A new play to draw the people in.

I sit here tonight with Urania close by,
Astronomy lighting up this night sky so bright,
And I’m not inspired to write even one little word,
Sorry if I bored you, and a very pleasant goodnight.

~*~

Muses, in Greek mythology, were the nine daughters of the god Zeus and Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory. The Muses were believed to inspire not only poets, but all artist.

Carpe' Diem

I was just curious who the muses were, and had fun with what I found - just to execise my mind, thank you.

Could you send one of them to my house when you're done with them?

Excellent, even though you think you've lost your muse, you haven't.

Absolutely loved the mythology lesson Sharon, and how you incorporated this all into some pretty darn good poetry.  Nicely done.

Your "mind exercise" has turned into a lovely poem Mysteria.  If Thalia is not too busy I would love to talk with her.

It's amazing what you can learn about if you search it out   However, all that reading and still my muse must be in Mexico!
