Jimmy had married when he was twenty.
Now, James Dunn was thirty one.
He and Barbara shared eleven years,
and for eight years shared a son.
All seemed fine in Jimmy's mind,
For Barbara, love had ran its course.
Jimmy's heart broke when his wife spoke
of seperation and divorce.
She packed her bags and moved in with friends.
The divorce was bitter and cold.
She was granted most of all Jim owned;
the pay his lawyer, the rest was sold.
It seemed as though his life was over.
All he had now was his son.
Until an unfair custody hearing,
that Barbara also won.
Tomorrow she would come for him...
The pain was too much for Jim to bear.
Granted every other weekend...
So little time to share.

That night, as Jim sat crying...
The boy, tucked away in bed...
The Demons came and played their games
inside of James' head.
The Demon called "DEPRESSION"
and the spectre named "DISPAIR"
came and plagued Jim's tortured soul,
'til Jim no more could bear.
His brain was stabbed ! His heart was throttled !
They drove him to the brink.
He tried to sedate them with the bottle.
The fiends thrived upon the drink !
From his chair he rose and crossed the floor.
From a drawer, he took a gun.
He walked down the hall, eased open the door,
and silently watched his son.
The boy lay there, so peacefully;
Soundly sleeping in his bed.
Jim closed the door, slow and carefully,
and wiped the tears he'd shed.

He scrawled a note, at the kitchen table,
with clouded eyes and shaking hand;
He did not know if the boy would be able,
but prayed he'd understand.
Perhaps, at least, when he grows older?
Jim silently slipped outside...
and upon each sagging shoulder
a Demon triumphantly did ride.

He got in his truck. The Demons approved .
He lifted a trembling hand.
He twisted and tugged and finally removed
the now null wedding band.
The Demons hissed, "Ease the pain!"
"Bring closure to this grief!"
Jim raised and cocked the pistol.
He placed the barrel between his teeth.

At that moment of final decision...
In that instant when Jim should die...
A faint light crossed his vision...
A shadow, at the corner of his eye...
Did someone move the curtain?
He turned his head in fright!
Did it move?  He was not certain.
Then, he saw a flash of light.
At the picture window, no longer a doubt,
with face pressed against the pane,
Stood Jim's son, peering out...
Jim lowered the gun again.

The moment had passed...  The Demons felt spurned,
but thought perhaps they'd still succeed.
Jim rapidly to the house returned
The boy seemed as though in need.
Jim thought of the letter he had wrote...
Now fear replaced the pain.
He prayed the child had missed the note!
How could he explain?
No one stood in the living room at all;
nor in the kitchen, nor the den.
Quickly Jim walked down the hall
to the his son's room once again.
He laid an ear upon the door... made not a peep
nor a sound was heard.
He opened the door...The boy lay, in sleep.
It was clear he had not stirred.
Surely Jim had seen his son...
As clear and plain as day.
But, all had spoken, save but one
The Saviour had yet to have His say.
He who knows each heart best
and reads them like an open book,
knows when we are in desperate quest
and shows us where to look.
Throughout trials and tribulation
Stand firm.  He'll show the way.
Here, God knew it was upon the son
that James Dunns heart did lay.

Today Jim's son is thirty six
and Jim is fifty nine.
Every day Jim praises God
for his new wife, Caroline.
But perhaps to say his "new" wife
is not appropriate here,
for soon will be the silver celebration
of their twenty fifth happy year.

Have you ever felt that you can't go on?
There seems so little hope...
The trials of life have bent you down.
No longer can you cope.
You dread a new day's greeting sun.
You mourn upon each breath.
All that you've gathered has come undone.
Perhaps peace lies in death?
I tell you friend... Hold on!   Hold on!
The clouds will surely pass.
A brighter day will dawn...  Hold on!
See it through !   Stand firm!   Hold fast!
Often times we feel we're sinking.
'Neath life's torrents we're surely drown.
But just when it seems that all is lost...
The Saviour reaches down.
With loving hands, He lifts us up
and life suddenly takes a turn.
So just hold on and dont give up!
See it through!   Hold fast!   Stand firm!
The Lord will surely shine a light
upon your darkened state!
There are examples and they are many...
This is one that I relate.
