I pulled into the driveway of the old homeplace;
For far too many years, I'd been away;
Trying to make a future in the ol' rat race;
But for now I need to relive yesterday.

I hugged and kissed Mom and Dad and sister Mary;
I was introduced to little Timmy, Mary's son;
He eyed my beard and said, "You sure are hairy!"
Then he squatted down and shot me with his gun.

So many precious memories, turning back time;
To the summers of my youth, so carefree;
There, I saw my parents, once more in their prime;
And that little freckled boy that once was me.

Oh, the days go by so fast...
Turn around and years have passed;
Where is that freckled kid I left behind?
Nothing makes me feel the way
That I did in childhood days;
With lightning bugs and honeysuckle vines.

David bought a house and half an acre;
Mary has a brand new shiny car;
Aunt Rosie collects salt and pepper shakers;
Little Timmy likes to wish upon a star.

Uncle Phil wants to win the lottery;
He's dreaming of a bass boat and a truck;
Aunt Suzie's into crafts and antique pottery;
Timmy wants a four-leaf clover for good luck.

Mama still has her jar of wheat back pennies;
She keeps looking for that '55 double die.
Aunt Suzie is hoping one day she'll be skinny
Little Timmy wants a piece of cherry pie.

Daddy says he sure could use a chain saw.
Brother Bobby bought his girl a diamond ring.
Grandma wants the plot right next to Gramdpa.
Little Timmy has a June bug on a string.

Oh, the days go by so fast...
Turn around and years have passed.
Where is that freckled kid I left behind?
Nothing makes me feel the way
That I did in childhood days;
With lightning bugs and honeysuckle vines.

Well, the folks are awful glad I came to visit.
Mama sets the table, with a smile.
It sure smells good and I don't want to miss it;
But I'm gonna play with Timmy for awhile.

A pleasure to read! Now I am smelling honeysuckle, and remembering a family reunion many many years ago, when I chose to hang out with all the little kids because the adults were boring me with their conversations about sports. LOL, I preferred the bug hunt expedition with my nephews and nieces, who captured a myriad of creepy crawlies to bring back to the fireside in order to show off their hunting expertise.
