       Five and Dime
(With apologies to John Prine)
           ***

When I was a child,
my family would pile
into Dad's station wagon
and go into town.
My allowance would be jingling,
my heart beating wild.
Mom and Dad always knew
where I would be found.
Sometimes I'd look for hours,
my quarters hot to spend,
on a new Matchbox car
or a bag of Army men.
We'd sit at the soda fountain,
with burger, coke and fries.
I'd have a sniper hiding
by a slice of Apple pie.

Mama, won't you take me
to the ol' Five and Dime.
We used to go on Saturdays.
Please, take me one more time.
"It aint here anymore, son.  I'm sorry to say,
Mr. Sam Walton's Superstore done ran it away.

Well the Malls kept getting bigger
and the Dime Store's out of date.
The Mall's got a map,
to help you navigate.
There's more people in there,
than used to be in this town.
Some have gone shopping,
and still aint been found.
Another piece of America
thats just a memory.
Like Drive-In Movies
and family T.V.
But I'm glad I had a chance
to live in a simpler time.
My mind still goes back
to the ol' Five and Dime.

Mama, won't you take me
to the ol' Five and Dime.
We used to go on Saturdays
Please, take me one more time.
"It aint around anymore son, I'm sorry to say,
Mr. Sam Walton's Superstore done ran it away.

Thank you Martie.  Its just a stupid little thing I thought of after reading Balladeer's Friday Night at Walmart.  Yours is excellent and tasted of Goofy Grape drink mix and Quisp cereal.

Oh how I loved the  ol' Five and Dime! Thanks for the trip back in time Uriah!
That's not all Mr. Sam Walton's done either.

You certainly take me back in time with
this one....My favorite was the chocolate
shake...the gumball machine and being
somewhat partial to pecan (PUH-KAHN) from
the Texas state dictionary....

Dang, now I am hungry...
