Mangy desert rats forced to walk a cattle track
scuttle in a frantic rush to reach a city buzz
for the promise of gold more precious than the fields
just there like an adornment acquired in antique stores.

Left-right, sleep tight; there’s no insight or daffodils in bloom
in the spring of he who leads from a selfish point of view
through the rivers of emotion and multitudinous needs
not yet in full eruption from the middle of all rats.

One perhaps in love would stand on solid ground
one perhaps in fear crack like a brittle stick
but it’s not in the scheme a major catastrophe
to lose a heartfelt straggler in a downslide run.

And the story teller loses notes underneath a tree
because there’s shade, you see, and peace, believe you me,
in the fields of a true love’s pure and simple honesty
if allowed to break free from this frenzied stampede.

Get up!  Get up!  We must rush before the noonday crush
and the rats are just like you and me going nowhere fast
and missing out the detail that’s surely meant to last
in each and every rat race that ends and starts again …
because love alone is not enough for money driven rats.

But I’m ratting on the wisdom handed down it seems
to a shy and timid rat sitting in a grove of trees
where once the bend of bough and leaf
brought forth a rush of love!

Oh, Helen, you do pass on the truth.  Rats do have choices, or do they not?  I think sometimes, it is the timing and just knowing when to scramble off the sinking ship.  But then again, the draw of the material is a very strong one, and only a rat who knows the secret can escape.  Enjoyed your renderings which always make me think.   ....jo

Thanks for the read, Jo.  As in all things I guess it's just a matter of balance.

You are amazing!!!

AMEN and articulated ultimately by your Godly muse that guides...
But I’m ratting on the wisdom handed down it seems

and still will someday...

Thank you so much, LeeJ, but, but, but, I want to write like you!     Sigh!  But I'm taking notes for my next dance around life's great mulberry bush.

It is true that love isn't enough for money driven rats. Argh. This is my one foe in life. It's hard to be an artists around all the rats. I promise not to get sucked under with them, though!

You write so eloquently!!!

Abby - Now remember that a promise is a promise and someone's watching you.   Wish I had a daughter to share poetry with - you've both got something special and we look after special things, right?  Thanks for the read.

Thanks for the read, Maureen.  Hmm?  I often wonder though whether stories are really and truly "just stories" but whatever only love can decide their fate.
