I confess
I wasn't keen
to visit the orphanage
I pictured listless
bodies and glum faces
pounding hard on
my errant apathy

The kids surprised me
with their cheerful demeanour
they gigglingly took to our piggybacks;
they thrilled with their tuneful singing

you stood aside, detached
from the enveloping festiveness

I understood
the soul-crushing appeal
of being a recluse
so, I sought you out
and you smiled

you showed me around,
bringing me to your room
where I gasped at
your grand total of possessions
which would fail to
fit into a drawer of
my ridiculous extragavance

you handed me a pen,
motioning me to take it
you caught me there;
I had nothing to reciprocrate
I hewed and hawed and
had to accept at the end,
not wanting to dismiss your heart

The pen's now dried-up
But it will stay with me always,
a poignant reminder of
the gift of giving

Kaile, this draws me speechless, isn't it amazing how rich a person/child can be, and the joy abounds for life, purpose, meaning...renders us humble...Kaile, that is a magic pen, which shall stay in in place forever...thank you from my heart for sharing this...thank you!

Kaile, I too have visited such a place and found it to be a very enriching life experience. You wrote of this, very very well. Nicely done.

I refuse to make plans past this moment in time....
