In a nation
where it takes an hour
to commute from one end to the other
and all your cliques
from various stages of your life
know one another vaguely,
one grows up as a frog in the well,
without realising so

Unveiling my ignorance,
I witnessed mere children with offical tags
soliciting for customers on the streets,
experienced needy orphans
being thrilled after my piggybacks,
apologised to shrivelled elderly
that I really couldn't give them money,
endured with a man with a half-foot smoking in my face
and gasped (inwardly) at the sight of a big-headed boy with small sticks for legs

Yet I return and
engage in conversation
about topics we secretly dread
but nonetheless discuss at length
because our lives are so darned mundane

I am the only animal in the circus
who has successfully escaped from his chains,

only to be shrouded by loneliness

Words that needed saying

Meaning that needed to be heard

hugging you across the seas
what a beautiful soul you are
your eyes are always wide open, figuratively as well as literally
and the portraits you paint with your words are superb
I love reading you, m'friend

thanks everyone for reading and for your precious comments.

Kacy, thanks for the hug and for your embarrassment-inducing praise just trying to do my best, as we all do

"one grows up as a frog in the well,

Well this has to be the best way I have ever heard this expressed.

Thank you for sharing this with us all...

Its been a good day yet another gem for my library

But never a moment ceased the fight of the one and the fifty-three."

kaile, I am sending you warm hugs of love and admiration across the seas of blue ~ literally and figuratively.

You have soul. You have heart. You have beauty. You have talent. ~ and you are REAL.

Hugs with much love,
Linda

[revised]

personal growth unmatched [title]

In a nation where distance is gobbled by hours
and distant acquaintances
routinely get splashed
on the newspapers,
one grows up as a frog in the well,
without realizing so

Trespassing overseas,
I came to unveil my ignorance

I ached for dirty children
peddling goods on murky streets,
their official tags coldly mocking

I gasped at a big-headed boy,
with matchsticks for legs,
haunted by the after-effects of war

I marvelled at how
people who own so little
can laugh so hard, so loud, so readily;
putting me, this material creature, to shame

Yet I return and
engage in conversation
about topics we secretly dread
but discuss at length
because we are too darned tired
to mend our glaring gap of intimacy

I am the only animal in the circus
who has successfully escaped from his chains;

Only to be shrouded by loneliness
