Listening to every heart

0 posted 2005-07-24 08:30 PM

You come back to me
on a Sunday’s stream of chicken-fried steam,
with creamed turnips [poor dirt’s meat]
with thick white gravy, salt & peppered, just so

and between us, those stories trickled back
of how you feared for me under your daughter’s guidance,
that I would never see age twenty-one, or more,
or know how to say words that underscored life
because I would die, young.  [Too good, you said]

That was, indeed, your greatest fear.

Your greatest desire was that I would
do something no one had in your family;
graduate college.
But I was stupid, I admit,
letting a silly boy color me flush in desire
while promising [more] schooling later;
you knew I would see to him and his dreams,
even under the thunderously raised eyebrows
of so many disbelievers, {but whose child IS good enough?}

Still, you wished me all the best, later checking on me,
by flying out on your own, to make sure
I was solid, and true, and not bruised by life,
no matter those rose-colored letters I sent home.
I promised you I would continue school,
and in a way, I have, but the only diplomas are those
of birth certificates of grandchildren, and great-grandchildren;
nothing more, just yet.

I will never say that your deep brown eyes
are still not eagle sharp
upon your first grandchild…oh no…
for I see you when I don colors of black,
or white, or beige…I just don’t wear stripes
as well as you did – although I have a few…
and when they cover this skin, I think of you,
how you bore yourself  like a  Queen…
and your smile…oh, your smile…

it welcomed the reverence of life, and all she holds!

If you are anything, you are solid and true...and so much more!

I would say that those certificates are equal to, if not more valuable, than any Harvard diploma. Motherhood being the toughest graduate  school that there is....

You apparently have earned a PHD in motherhood,
and life in general, the words of your poems and stories are the sheepskins that prove it...

Wow...powerful.  I wonder...will my college life be written in the same fashion?  But...I digress.  Very profound write.

My goodness, K, this was incredible!!  A great relationship you and your Grandma had and have to look forward to again on the other side!

Hugs to you... ...and thank you for this.  Even though the memories aren't the same...I have been thinking of my dear Grandmother and how much I miss her!  Your words brought about the tears that have been wanting to come out, but I found impossible to let go of.

God bless, m'friend!  ~  Becka

center sounds of life's stage
wearing melodeous treasures
feeding chubby faces of motherhood
sister to the next day and the next
courageous incantations of birth
you the image lighted mirror

tremendous poem and 1st morning read
hugs

From within me comes the wish to be such a grandparent to inspire such a depth of feeling from a grandchild.  Beautifully written.  KJ
