Four times, each day
I change my tee shirt.
Two hours from fresh
I am drenched;
On coming off
It's thrown in the truck,
(A wet-lump of cotton)
Having been peppered
By a habanero sun,
And sweat salted.

Changing, brings to sound the ah!
That signs refreshment,
But...

The July heat is omnipresent
Sustains a close-heaviness,
An oppressive weight
On those that work outside,
Who whisper,  "thanks"
When bells toll noon, and speak,
"It's twelve, go sit within the line,
That separates the sun from shade"..

People downtown, stare out windows
Day dreaming of lotions, and sandy beaches-
Talking from cubicles about week-end fun.
Under fake suns,  conditioned breezes
Blow against stained windows,
Mint julep-tinted, cool atmospheres
Of a false reality...the church goers wear
Dry clothes... protected inside
From the hells of summer.

Across the street...

Roofers climb down valleys
Descend from peaks, leaving
Sneaker tracks in shingle-gravel...
They'll wait to realight
When the surfaces  cool,
And fire in the sky furnace
Drops a few degrees,
Below the boiling point of tar.

After lunch...I toil at tasks
Of my trade, spreading mulch
That's hot as blacktop..

After that, to hydrate flowers
My walking across,
Leaves tracks in the lawn;
Dry grass in desert sand-
Bent down ..flat... blades
Playing dead,  brittle-weak,
Are springs unable to recoil...

Two o'clock..dripping sweat.
I change my shirt again...

Now, that's hot!

Excellent...
now bring forth your name,
and we'll make tea...

Ford

I have been trying to write of the weather today...it has been so hot and humid here...and now there are thunderheads over the mountains and a flash flood warning.  I can hardly wait!!  I'm glad you wrote the poem for me.  My muse seems to be on vacation.

LOL@Serenity!
This summer has been a scorcher indeed Ford.
And an oppressive heat at that.
Tomorrow...same as today..only hotter.
Guess I'm getting old(er)..
never thought I'd see the day I would complain about the heat.
But I am now!
Thanks for saying it for me!
Try and stay cool.
Hugs~Nancy

Something tugs at me, I've no doubt of that.
Something from the sea, whichever one I'm near.
When I stray too far from beachland, it calls me back

I've felt that spicy sun...HOT...
What a great way to describe it!
And wet T shirts aren't always fun either.

This is so right-on!

"Having been peppered
By a habanero sun,
And sweat salted."

I have to say I've been there, having grown up in AZ, (though never allowed the luxury of throwing off my tee)---

Beautifully done, ice.

Smiles,
Constance

Are you sure you're not landscapping down here in Houston, Ford...lol!  No laughing matter, really.  The truth is that most of the people in this nation are so wrapped up in the a/c'd living styles, they cannot comprehend what the heat really is.  And...it is getting very hot.  Much enjoyed.   ...jo
