Saluting with misty eyes

She lies there alone
Scared
Crying for her Daddy
Who didn't come home
This afternoon
She's hungry again
Lunch a scrap of cheese
Found along the street
As she wandered
Going deeper into her jungle
Finding her way back
Into her world
The box down the alleyway
Knowing he'll be there soon
Sleeps fitfully
And dreams on
Hugging her only friend
Her tattered bear
On her concrete mattress

I remember this, and it is as stark now, as then. This is a poem that won't leave your nightmares...

This one makes me cold.  I hurt with her.  Well done.
