And when some day in the distant future,
archaeologists dig up the Sinai in Egypt
for traces of lost civilizations

what might they find
in the Sinai desert?

asbestos, and tons of rubble,
the remains of today's Gaza strife,
torn down settlements
torn down lives
from both sides

but what will it tell them
of the day-to-day struggles
of death and survival,
the day-to-day realities
of Palestinians and Israelis?

Not enough to learn, I'm willing to bet. And I backspaced the rest of what I was going to say, as my politics are better suited elsewhere in the forum, but I appreciate the wisdom here, Kacy.

and oh--

This caught my eye, as I've been picturing New Orleans as a legendary underwater city...

OH. We already are a legendary underwater city!

But how odd that I was working on something similar.

Much enjoyed, my feisty friend!

Kacy, I wonder if it will simply tell them that "humanity is hopeless"...?  I'm really, REALLY trying to think otherwise, but...  Maybe if we could get some of the positive poems from this site deeply engraved on the equivalent of a Rosetta Stone, there may be a hint of promise...?

I'm thanking each of you for your thought filled replies. Egypt has indicated it might be willing to accept tons of rubble from torn down settlements, something both Palestinians and Israelis have rejected. They don't want it buried in Gaza, and much of it contains asbestos, and other harmful chemicals and building materials. Sad to say, the burial site in the Sinai desert will be a ghostly graveyard, and will not tell the true story of what happened to the people. Sometimes, I wonder about other digs, including one or two I visited in the Middle East, as well as ancient sites such as Masada. We are always interpreting the past from these digs, and now? what if they lied about the realities of the ancients? what truths do we really know of the Incas and Aztecs? the tribes of Israel that scattered throughout the diaspora?
~Sigh~ and even for those of us who live in these times, what do we really know of the peoples who are caught up in these struggles?
Man, I think I need to go pour myself another glass of whine tonight, for I made the mistake of watching/reading the world's news again today.

*nodding head*  Kacy.

it is sad, isn't it?

and they have no clue
what is being destroyed.

Very thought provoking write, Midnitesun.  I can't imagine a dig being able to show the extent of what people experienced or to show their feelings.  I enjoyed your poem because it made me think.

I still remember your prose on the Masada.  Your experience there was remarkable!  I challenge any future posters here to hop down to the Prose portion and find it.
