Statues in gaudy colors
Yellow blue and red
Like cartoons on columns
Under an Aegean sky

Had Goethe been aware
Of what the Greeks preferred
Would he and his era
Been so mesmerized

It is an illusion
Created by need
That fosters love
Often regardless
Of what is said

Or done by the one
So fawned upon

That only a stone
Would not smile and dine
