Gather the driftwood while you may
for some day you shall not
be able to freely roam the shores
for all the signs posted

Do Not Trespass! Private Property!
Forbidden fruit signs prevail
along many coastal lands.

But who really owns it, anyway?
Surely not you, nor I, not a single
two legged creature beyond those
of a feathered persuasion
really own the beaches and the dunes.

And that is how it should be.
Beaches should be free.

I’ve gathered driftwood
at the edges of the Pacific
from Alaska to Mexico;
I've gathered driftwood and shells
along the Adriatic, the Dead Sea, the Red Sea,
the Great Salt Lakes, the Mississippi
and from the shores of the Gulf and Atlantic.

And I have yet to see a piece
of coastal or inland water territory
that truly belongs to humans
in spite of all those blasphemous signs.

So gather the driftwood while you may,
for some day you might not find any land
that is sign-free.

I have found driftwood along a few water ways ...

... the very signposts such signs once rested on!!!

perhaps it is more than just the wood that has drifted from humanity.

may freedom always be at your feet my friend!!

Beaches and the sea are the epitome of freedom...putting a fence around them is like putting an albatross in a cage...sacrillage!!!...great write here Kacy...you are right to be worried...get to the beach while you can is the lesson learned from this..

Thank you for your words...glad i could have helped you..even in a small way..

" And the sign said anybody caught trespassing would be shot on sight
So I jumped on the fence and yelled at the house, Hey! what gives you the right
To put up a fence to keep me out or to keep mother nature in
If God was here, he'd tell you to your face, man you're some kinda sinner"

("Signs" - Five Man Electrical Band -1970)

.......

enjoyed the poem, in spite of the signs...

Thanks for that reply, Phil. And thanks again for the inspiration! And now, this redheaded blonde will go to the beach this weekend, to gather more driftwood, while she may.
Ford? That tune is a great oldie! agree with those sentiments!
