Listening to every heart

October…Near Nigh Naught

September streamed a sigh, then dogged
these days of fall, when chiller winds
should prevail but all feel naught …

naught, that is, but a caress upon skin
of lightly summered skill of sun
so much so, that a skiff should be set
among the reeds and tails
of a forgotten pond, where croakers
voice deep, and snapping turtles
watch the dragons fly…

October…just one, no, two nights that hinted
to the crest of forever’s length that would soon
disappear…and then it did, fall did, back into
summer’s solstice…with an odd silence…

I even watched to see if the moon would swing
from its given norm, so gently did we fall back
into the sounds of summer…

and it brought me back to a year ago,

when I wasn’t among the taller of grasses,
no, but among poets, and loved ones,
family and friends, renewing and anewing
kinships of ever…for all the falls to come,

but all of the springs, and summers, too…

that would warm me, come the tides
of chilled, willed winds that now seem,
somehow, so distant, just yet…

just yet…and here I stand, given points of
trajectory pin-pointedly adept of compassed arms

my east, I do not yet know all of it…
my west…where hearts abide…
my north, from whence it started…
my south, where coffee awaits
at the Café DuMonde…

I will bring back my cup, just to sip that strength
again….

and now I ramble, as does the wind, as the cow birds
and black birds gain in hover over milo seed;

where I think I should be, yet hearken
to the unnamed dream…

and where color may be as brilliant
as the scape before me.

It seems October should not see concrete and glass,
though…

no…it should be near nigh naught
of concrete

and glass.

You bring back days of my youth with such vivid clarity. A lovely and haunting write ina such a soothing way. Peace.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

Sissie....this takes me back to last October and the beautiful days of friendship and blue sky and a silly peacock.  I wish you were here in your west right now.

An absolutely stunning write!  There are poets and there are "POETS" and you are the latter with this captivating right.

I love this, and the picture is beautiful. I really liked these particular parts, if you don't mind..

of lightly summered skill of sun
so much so, that a skiff should be set
among the reeds and tails
of a forgotten pond, where croakers
voice deep, and snapping turtles
watch the dragons fly…

Simply..stunning poetry.

"a forgotten pond, where croakers
voice deep, and snapping turtles
watch the dragons fly…"

I know this place.....
And real dragons do fly there.

It is a place where "summer’s solstice…(speaks loud) with an odd silence…"

And yes it is free of concrete and glass...

This poem is a wonder, just like that place....

I dread the fall, though I love the cooler weather and colorful surroundings ... I guess I'm just a Canadian that hates winter.
One good thing about October is, its inspiration upon superb poets like yourself.

excellent read and the picture reminds me of out home (to the north)

Ditto!  I too am amazed at how easy you seem to add just the right detail and color to a poem, still leaving room for sidetrips and imagination...
   A pleasure to read;
