The Cabin

Thru wintry woods, alone, I ride
Upon an open sleigh
Across the ice the runners glide
My horse it knows the way

From graying sky the snowflakes fall
To cover path below
And light upon the gray rock wall
Beneath the old willow

The cottage under snow is laced
It’s aged, it seems, since last
I visited this secret place
To conjure ghosts of past

For it was here my love and I
Lived when we first were wed
And here in future’s dreams we’d lie
Each night safe in our bed

Oh how that seems so long ago
Those years before the war
And how I begged him not to go
There to those distant shores

The cabin lies in epitaph
And through the falling snow
The memories come like photographs
The joy and the sorrow

It’s been twenty long years today
The fated letter came
And took all of my hopes away
Though no one was to blame

They said he died a hero’s death
He saved a hundred lives
And to his last and final breath
He struggled to survive

I left the cabin the same day
I buried all my dreams
There with his body in decay
Down near the old millstream

But every year I find my way
Through forest and through snow
To visit memories for one day
Of he that I loved so

And though the cabin lays in waste
My love for him shines bright
And when death comes I will embrace
Him bathed in Heaven’s light

I am nothing special...and my name will soon be forgotten, but I've loved another with all my heart and soul, and to me,this has always been enough.~N.S

Perfection! And what a delight to read you again and see you here. I pray all is well.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

Ruth, you still amaze me after all this time. A story wonderfully told and you always write your words in a way they are "easy" to read. Great poem.

You tell this heart-wrenching story, told simply, yet with great lines.

"And here in future’s dreams we’d lie"

"The cabin lies in epitaph"

These give us such telling images.  You've written a beautiful and lasting poem.

Best, Ken

The yawn of a dawn will hasten the light
