They All Will Gather

“They all will gather‘round”, said he
As though a kindred soul
They all will gather graciously
To seek one common goal”

“From many a town, they all will come
From ev’ry distant place
They all will gather here, me lads
By God’s most holy grace”

And all men present settled in
And lent a sharpened ear
For when the aged prophet spoke
Not one refused to hear

A prophet he, in seaman’s clothes
Misplaced among the lot
Though no pretense was ever made
To be what he was not

“But we’re at sea“, the capt’n said
While pacing toward the prow
The prophet paused as though the voice
Spoke out of turn somehow

His face shone bronze in lantern light
His hands looked as a youth
Precise the words he seldom spoke
But spoken was the truth

“They all will gather here, me lads
In harmony and love
Their differences will fly the winds
Of this I’m certain of”

Dishonest men were pondering
The cause for such an act
But knew that what the prophet spoke
Would some day turn to fact

Though scoundrels all, and ruthless thieves
That led a pirate’s life
Upon a ship mate’s prophecy
They’d wager their own life

Not one among them knew of love
Between their fellow men
But love that he had prophesized
Not one would doubt again

The flickering flame, licked by the breeze,
Flashed softly on his face
“You ask“, he said, “how this can be
In this unlikely place?”

For moments not another phrase
From out his mouth would slip
And all was silent, less the waves that
Slapped against the ship

With eyes upon a weathered face
Illumined in the light
They waited for more words to fill
The hours of the night

This man of truth among the lot
Of wild and wayward crew
Was well aware no man aboard
Would witness what he knew

And yet they listened like a child
About to climb in bed
In midst of some enchanting tale
That swirled about their head

“We are in salty sea, it’s true
But mixed with river’s blend
As salty sea and mountain rain
Meet at a river’s end”

Not two knots from the starboard side
A town will take its toll
A port that’s not for pillage,lads,
But pity o’ the soul”

“Some day a storm fro’ east southeast
Will strike the river queen
An’ winds will bring the waters in
Like ne’er a man has seen”

“The devil’s hand, and this I vow,
Will devastate the shore
And only blimey time will make it
As it were before’’

“Be this curse nigh upon us, mate?
Begad! A bilge ye tell!”
“Nay, nay a century’s length times three
Will birth this bloody hell!”

‘Tis here where many a man shall come
As though of common blood
And they shall gather here to help
The victims of a flood”

“They all will gather round, said he
As though a kindred soul
They all will gather graciously
To seek one common goal”

“From many a part, they all will come
From every distant place
They all will gather here, me lads
By God’s most holy grace”

Then no one spoke but each man felt
The power of God's own might
And only slapping waves could break
The silence of the night

Good poetry grows gardens
Turning round and round great lengths
To be devoured by the wings of ears
Your story dazzles a mighty power
From inside to out
Edible with golden smiles & rainbow tongue
Your faith reaches a hold to well over
Like a deep river cavern
Oozing with colors of iron
You own a faith with long legs
Of moments settling into woven cities
Of words, weaving paths to help us on our journeys

Yeah…
Stunned indeed, despite our knowledge of your wealth...I've been blessed to call you friend...thank you Liz, for this powerfully enlightening story.

        Elizabeth Santos:
"Stunned" indeed. I am sitting here frozen with words caught in my throat and cannot get anything else out of my mind and onto these pages to let you know how much I admire your mind. You are a wonderment!
Thank you for this. martyjo

My dear Queen of Poetry, nothing amazes me since I've met you. Your poetic skills reach Heaven my friend.

I'm carrying you close to heart Liz and still think a lot of early morning hours spend in that little garden playhouse.

You are one special lady
