in the shadows

This cold rain tonight
has left me chilled
with an ache I have known before;
I read a poem I keep around
simply to remind my soul
that it can fly beyond goodbye,
with a simple taste of whim.

My thoughts tonight
are wrapped tightly around my feelings
binding them within emotions
lightly folded against the razor’s edge of reason
on this Lupercalia night;
yet I am left
beneath a building quickening Moon
to stand
as if an equal amongst images so crisp and clean,
though in what shimmers as reality
I am left defenseless,
a tolerated traveler,
unsheltered in a foreign land,
unwelcomed,
and so perfectly undone.

I sense,
but merely in pastel shades,
the fire of the child not yet born to you,
as alive as you or I though
not yet conceived in linear time,
the visitor within your dreams
who steps through each living day with you
always at your side,
patiently waiting
as if there could be any chance
you have failed to understand the reality
of the little hand that strokes your cheek
to comfort you
when you are sad,
or frightened,
or inside a troubled sleep.

I drank of the living juice this day
to help,
though I am merely audience;
to understand
without the power to bend this reality,
to know
without the life force to meet the will,
sets my soul to reel
in dimensions where once again
I do not belong;
there I see Hera waiting
with open hand,
her patience unknowable by man,
she would bring you both through time
to greet Tonatzin,
if your spirit has the steel.

"if your spirit has the steel."

If not?

Then know the temperance

will knock upon the door...

so much to feast on this day, I save you to savor again, tomorrow.

*shaking my head*

Who else could work in "Lupercalia night;"

complete with a semi-colon, grin,

and make it read like the hula too.

(er...that was meant as compliment )

icebox - I'm speechless as I so often am when reading your work because of the depth of your insight.  None of us are powerless - it just seems that way.

There is a conflict of two terms here that I must use to state how this poem comes across to me.

Smooth and gritty...how could this be?
Don't know, but don't really care...it is your style, which is very enjoyable to me...

A little longer than your usuall stuff, I-box
Thanks for the linger...

The way you see and feel things is very profound!
