A Dhobi Girl...
Clay of the Earth

Adobe
...clay of the earth.
A dhobi girl of India,
...untouchable by birth.

Birth rights and birth rites.

That is what dooms her
to wash polluted clothing by the river.

And even as another Untouchable
chokes back tears of brick dust
an even lower level caste man
scavenges within the sewers,
cleaning debris from the clogged
gutters of India,
the arteries of human excrement and waste.

And yes, it is against the laws of modern India
to practice the art
of Untouchability,
but it is a law
that is not enforced.

Have we similar unenforceable laws
which persist within our own civilized sewage?

I wish to dedicate this to the memory of
Mr Peter Benenson, Amnesty International.

*May ripples of Love
become waves of Peace*

Mish, I am still wondering if the devastating tsunami will somehow level the field, making everyone equal.
And...also, wondering what it might take to bring true equality to the rest of this planet.

Good job, Kacy, keep up the good fight!  Ken

Through rubble and trouble and dark of night
The yawn of a dawn will hasten the light

thanks to each for reading
nice to see you here, Vandana!
yes, Mish, it's a shame it sometimes takes a great tragedy to put people on a level playing field, if only for a few minutes or days

Shame on the human race for letting things like this happen. But what a nice tribute this is indeed.

If social Darwinisim is a form of bigotry,
then we in the U.S. practice the same type of sewege.

From the top down, people are still trickled on, and it's not money I am speaking of.

I won't say any more, don't want to turn this into the alley..

Thanks Kacy...nice tribute
