What kind of God
Gave form to its idea,
And then wove such ugly strands
Into the pattern of its cloth?

I ask these questions, as I look out my window.

************************************************
They came from the east in short trots and stops
Gods design of two made one, beauty and misery;
Travelers on the path of Blake's regeneration,
Or children woven, on the loom of Milton's Los?

Unimpressed by promises in faith;
Logic teaches different, as does reason
And yet my mind races oval tracks,
As the gray-fox scratches its tormentors
That have set up a house of distress,
On the foundation of its hairless back.

But I digress, and snap awake
Having reduced all to physics and chemistry
My sense of rage and disgust defies reason
And I turn away from the thoughts of rationalist,
Who wear glasses colored rose to visualize
The future coming of a gentler, tamer world

And reacknowledge the reality of the tiger:

Oh, parent of all, here seen beating your child
What evil has it done to earn the punishment
Of corporal stains, from invisible tooth whips?

What need is served by its burning cuts?
The fox bit no share of Eves apple! besides

It is you that's said assigns your children parts,
And writes the script for predator and host.
It is said that in your art is mercy
But your hand draws (outside my window)
A high form of animated suffering...

So I turn away from thoughts
Of a benevolent-consistent God,
And lay my head and frame upon
The pallet of transcendental mystery.

The cosmos boomed, but no one heard,
And shortly after atoms found their place

And traveled here to this long after-
Adams Eden, and his fall;
I peer through the glass of a different age
And ask what kind of merciless God
Would create a perfectly, beautiful fox,
And then pester it with mange?

hear you on this~
there is more hate than love more disrespect than respect~
more chaos  more violence  less time
as their greed takes us from family
to destroy faith virture humanity
when tried before to keep love and peace and fight their war  they destroyed
all mankind i fear for our children and grandchildren  most who will never know how sacred and precious life is and how its being destroyed along with earth as nothing is put back and all is poisoned  shame control  only thinks of greed and need and what is wanted now  not realizing concequences of the after  cant think that far ahead    something  needs to happen  before we are all destroyed  and no ever going home

My spirit will rise
above the sea~
There will be no drowning
of my soul or me~

Marsha
I am left speechless by your reply..

The feeling reminds me of how I felt when I read your epic..
"from the serpent, the sacred river flowed"

Which to me is as good as any Milton wrote, perhaps because it is more understandable.
*******************************************
(there is)"more chaos  more violence  less time"

Yes, but we do have all the time there is, and I believe there is still reason to hope.

But I do have strong feelings of a quick and rude awakening in store for us all.

And the part that bothers me is that it may not be the nurturers that survive, as the indifference of natural law may allow only the exploiters to survive...by chance

Perhaps the rein of man has run its course, and one of the animals that has no choice but to obey natures rules, will become the dominant?

In the mean time I will not lay down my sword of thoughts, and I know you will not either..

Peace to you, and all that you love

Ah, but the fox is wily,
albeit wearing the mange of suffering,
and perhaps will dig a hole
through to a tomorrow

and who knows?

Mayhap, those that leave the fox live,
as should the coyote, deer, elk, and bear...

perhaps our brother spirits
will know of those who bleed
for one and all of them,

and invite us to that better day?

Thank you for this gift, this day, Ford.

echoes of your heartfelt plea
will inevitably fall on deaf ears
on those who have sadly never known love

but thankfully, there are still a few good ones out here who hang to hope

Maybe we should look upon our own generation and those in the next that we have raised to allow such things to happen...

too short a reply but as a former teacher and  one  now going back to the profession I feel for those children whose parents are  not "raising" them but are giving in to them out of guilt...and a society allowing direspect of all kinds:
culturally/morally/socially/worldly to exist in  exchange for greed and a higher level of living.
just my  honest opinion

a very good write...

yes ice something is happening
the ground shakes  the sea is calling
they have sucked the life not only out
of us but this land we live on
how can it be stopped. love has been trying for years and we get sicker and weaker
and broken  but i have this strong survival will in me, dont seem like it at times but its there,  and all this going out of states to fight their wars,  leaves us open and neglected easy to destroy,  they bring all here   to take all their   chaos  has to come to a halt so more can really see whole picture  and observe and recall  realize  lies,  we cant look back  we need to look today  before their future soldiers take over.  domestic violence is no different than terrorism  and rape and molesting  neglect  its not just destroying buildings   thats matereials   the lifes is what is importand  keeping  all weak and broken  and barely surviving so no time to see.  reality   sorry for rambling  but i have strong sence of disaster  unless more of the same pull together without fear to take a stand forget the wrongs just work to get it right

My spirit will rise
above the sea~
There will be no drowning
of my soul or me~

Thanks you  friends for your deep thought and strong replies.....

This poem was actually inspired by a fox that walked along the woodsline of my backyard...He had very little hair on his body except for his tail, which was full and bushy...a sign of hope that he may recover

I was sad for it, poor creature-child of a merciless God it seemed.....but as I wrote this poem I realized that it was no worse off than we humans, that carry our own types of moral and physical, pestilent burdens...

And so the metaphors are aimed at all species winged or slimy, four leggeds and two leggeds...

Ford, your sense of disgust
IS reason.
My occasional burst of HOPE
defies reason.
And may we somehow heal
as fully as the fox.

An amazing poem, Ford!  I am a being who loves the four legged and winged creatures of this earth....and your poem really touched me in a tender spot that wants to rescue.  Thank you for this empathetic view.

I take a more optimistic view, or perhaps I am looking out a different window. I have seen so much evil and have been its victim, but I also believe that there is a reason (not by reason) for many things (in the general scope) we are incapable of understanding.
It seems there is endless abuse, but history tells us it was ever thus.

"And the part that bothers me is that it may not be the nurturers that survive, as the indifference of natural law may allow only the exploiters to survive...by chance"

Perhaps, but not in the end.(from out my window)

No window is capable , however, of diminishing the "awesomeness" of this piece and the talent behind it.
An amazing read, to say the least
Take care,
Liz
