Gratitude, a simple word, but sometimes hard to say.
Some folks never speak it, some folks shy away.
The ones we love forget it, take for granted all their needs.
A lesson that is hard for some, is learning the word, “please.”

If we were to please a soul, what words would we need share?
The simple act of doing might replace so many errors.
Gratitude is like that, not always shown with words,
But in simple acts of kindness and random acts of love.

I would like to say the words to let you know you’re prized.
So I will pen this poem for you and think kinds thoughts toward you tonight.
I wish that I could make them see, their father is a gem.
For truly, you are treasured so. I value you, my friend.

Our children, they do teach us well that time is relative.
They see their way, just one long day, “thank yous” seldom said.
And so, we parents do our best to love them anyway.
Despite lack of the thanks and forgotten “please,” we learn of love, unconditionally.

those random acts of love and kindness, those little touches do mean so much.
please and thank you, say volumes
and we just have to remind them and teach them and hope some of it sticks, the world
has become colder and the little niceties
are very often overlooked
let's all have some warm milk and cookies
and hug goodnight

I really liked this part...
I guess I am a lucky mom, my kids do say please and thank you quite a bit...

SEA, you sure are lucky.  The friend I wrote this for is so unappreciated....it breaks my heart to see it because he gives so much.  Someday, they will appreciate that but it doesn't seem so now.   ....jo

Jo...Sometimes it is in the mistakes we make, that we learn the greatest lessons...perhaps it is so with these children.  Your compassion for your friend is very touching!

you know I didn't say it near enough growing up...but now? I call my folks all the time and remind them of something they did and I do say thank you. Or I will tell them how much something they did meant to me. It will come back to him...kids can get so caught up in what is right in front of them, that "I can't see past my own nose" kind of a thing, that they do forget to say it. Later on in life, those things he thinks they took for granted, will be the things they remind him of and thank him for.

Agreeing, these words could be spoken more often, at home and in public.

SEA -- I do the same thing with my mom...hehehe...thank goodness for unlimited long distance.  My father passed some time ago while I was still young....he taught unconditional love...just wish I had shown him more gratitude but I know he knows.  *hugs* .....jo

You know Jo, I am thinking that the please and thank yous come with age, my son caught on early as have his girls, but some it takes longer   Nicely done!

I hope your friend learns soon how much he is appreciated, and since it's going around?

I thought I'd take a moment to express gratitude for our friendship.

You are a lovely being, jo-jo.

This is a wonderful poem. I have found, that for some people, it is just not in their vocabulary to say the please and thank yous.

It is often the two secret words that open doors and people can not think what they are.

Nice one Jo.

Jo,
I wish I'd written this or even applied this!  Yes, there are so many dear ones who
I owe gratitude and appreciation.  This hit home with me.  BTW, I'm thankful I have you as a big sister!

What a lovely poem!

in common courtesy, respect is shown - such simple little words carry such great volume and yes, often it is in actions that the words are said - children are little sponges and mimics - they will do as they see - so then should we behave -

enjoyed the thoughts of this jo - and the heart in it
