“Pahleeeze Gramma, take me with you?”
Her pleading eyes burned
A gaping hole in my heart.
I wished I hadn't told her my plans,
Now how the heck did this start?

“I want my very own little firefly.
You said we’d go catch one,
Just you and I.
You promised me we'd do these things,
We’d do them all before you die.”

“We’d sail high up over the way down below,
Watching clouds above as off we’d go.
We’d sail up to the moon and back
You promised me that then,
Are you taking it all back from me again?”

I had no words except these few,
“When you’re older honey,
We’ll do all the things I promised you,
Firefly catching, air balloons,
Maybe even find you a fairy or two.”

“We’ll sail up high in the sky
A big balloon will be our host,
Searching for our Neverland
The place we love the most.
A promise is a promise,
I won’t let you down.”
With that she turned away from me
Wearing her best heartbreaking frown.

“When will I be old enough then?”
Her muffled sobs brought tears to my eye.
“When will we go on our adventure Gram?”
How could I possibly tell her a lie?

I promised her when she was older
We’d sail away just us two,
Something like Winkin, Blinkin, and Nod
Those 3 who sailed off in a shoe.

Smiling she said cheerfully,
“Well now I am going up to bed.”
I had to wonder what scheming was now
Going on inside her sweet head.

Then quickly she turned to me
Hands on hips and she said,
“Guess what I am going to do?”
I am going to go to bed now, and pray,
Tomorrow I’ll wake up and be 22!

She didn't stop there,
No sir, she had to go on and explain.
I knew I was in trouble
I could just feel it again.

You said, "God never lets anyone down."
So that was my cue to get out of town!

This is a true story about my oldest grandchild Victoria, who wants to come on holidays with me so badly this year, but she is not allowed. I think she is still mad at al of us, as a matter of fact,
I am sure of it.

I think maybe she is a little older than she's had credit for.  This is darling.  Love, Joyce

Well now, there's a young lady who's been made a promise and is not going to let you forget it, lol. This is adorable, as is the sweetie-pie that's breaking your heart on this one. Hang in there Sharon.

Best wishes and hugs,
/Kit

Marge/sis

This poem is a treasure, as is the love between you and she, and your understanding of how a girl can be.  Just precious!

Well she is still mad, but not as mad.  I can see the Irish and Scottish roots in her stubborness though I tell you.  I will take her on a hot air balloon ride for her birthday if I live through my ride, and Nan and Kit can help me catch some fireflies to transport back to Vancouver for her - well I hope.

Thanks everyone - these two girls are a constant source of inspiration, all I have to do is learn how to write it out better so I can tell you!

Wow you do such kewl things in the States!  I loved that picture and so will Tori - thanks Sharon.

Kacy - ever seen any up where you were in Alaska?  I don't think they are over here on this side are they? LOL, never heard tell of one firefly in this province anyway.  I am looking forward to seeing them even if Kit says they are ugly when they are not busy being lit up.

Sure, you're saying they're ugly, just cause you're trying to get out of your promise. LOL  This is a very precious post.  They are adorable and I can just hear that little voice saying, "But, Gram.."

Thanks for sharing them with us, even if you were in their "mad book."

Nice to know you have grandchildren that look up to you, there are families where the grandchildren never really know or accept their grandparents...call it a fact of life due to generational differences or the effect of in-laws or...
enjoyed this

Thanks everyone!

Ecrivan - I think they like me because I forgot to grow up myself see I enjoy the playground as much if not more than they do.  However, yes I am grateful I am so loved, it is indeed a gift without a price tag.
