I feel its heartbeat in my blood
At night it calls my name
I'm haunted by this one desire
And I am not the same

At first I felt its stirring pull
Like songs upon the breeze
It kept me young and gave me strength
It made me feel at ease

And then too soon its power grew
It held me in its grasp
And in the night I sweat and shake
All I can do is gasp

Its will grows stronger as mine fades
It leads me to my doom
What once began with purest joy
Is shrouded now in gloom

I trudge along weary and weak
No strength to carry on
Each bitter step a tread of pain
Without a light or song

My only hope destroy the ring
And cast it in the fire
My only prayer, I have the strength
To overcome desire

I hold the ring within my hand
And look into the flame
I know the thing that I should do
But I am not the same

My mind's made up, my fortune set
I cannot do this thing
Then gollum comes behind me and
He boldly steals the ring

He dances there upon the edge
And falls down to his end
At that moment my heart breaks
I, to despair, descend

Now clouds of grey fill up my life
And every day's the same
I want to breath, to live again
But spend each day in shame

Although the ring has been long gone
I feel it in my mind
Its heartbeat echoes in my blood
And to all life I'm blind

I wait the day when I’m released
From torment and from shame
I should be proud, should be so pleased
But I am not the same.

Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind.  Unknown

Oh, Lordie... you combine your fantastic rhyme and perfect rhythm with a story I love... I'm putty in your poetic hand! LOL

You do know you're sending me back to read the books again, right?? LOL

Excellent write, my friend... Doing what's right doesn't always lead to peace of mind, does it? *S*

...But I am not the same...

Yes, once exposed, a memory / desire is almost always hard to resist.
Excellent write.

Thanks, Melton

Kethry,
Good stuff here. As with Tolkiens' work, there are parallels that can be drawn. Might poetry not substitute the "one ring"?
For some of us I think it has, but, I've not yet come to point where Gollum has stolen any of mine, nor cast it into a volcano, yet, there's always hope.
