My name is Coral,
and my arms stretch out,
     reaching
        branching
            into the Earth's great seas.

You will find me on my knees,
     lovingly
        sheltering
those crawling on claws and spidery legs,
while multi-colored fishes dart in and out
amongst my many sheltered coves.

I harbor diversity in harmony, am a giver
     protector of life
for the creatures of the seas.

I have lived and grown in a journey
of time and space far longer
than the annals of the human race.

And now I find myself attacked
     not just by hurricanes
         but from pollution, carelessness,
         aggressive collectors
who rip me apart, determined to display me
     in some glass case,
         in their eyes
         merely a prized trophy.

But I am a living organism,
though I may look like a dead plant
     or a scratchy old stick.
I am a living animal, or more precisely,
     a colony of living things,
          working symbiotically,
          in harmony and unity
for the greater good of all.

Do not disregard me or abuse me,
out of ignorance,
callousness,
or indifference.

For my fate
is connected to your fate.

My name is Coral.
And I am more like you
than you ever knew.

Well said, Kacy

The Coral is but one thread in the tapestry of life on this planet, and humans are another...There is a limit on how many threads humans can pull out before the tapestry unravels...I know that you are a nurturer, and you try to keep the weave together, you prove that by your poetry..
Thank you for being and doing so..

Nancy, Martie, Raph, Ford
thanking each of you
Ford, that was such a beautiful kind reply, deserving of an extra dose of thank you hugs.
I try, and hopefully succeed sometimes, to be a true friend to mother earth.
