Second Hand Smoke Detector
By: Noah Eaton
11/9/04

There’s way too much drama in this world,
Too much of it in this wounded world,
They used to say "drama is when actors cried,
But it is only when the audience cries..."

So much anger, so much dread,
The news silences one sweet song from resting your head,
Phone banks drumfiring with death threats,
Talk of coup d’tats and embezzlements,
Holograms of voiceless memories from Tel Aviv to Kinshasa,
Wounded Knee, Kent State, Auschwitz and Chechnya,
Can we see the visions of young girls never grow to be mothers,
How much tragedy must go on until we honor our brothers,
An armchair general keeps tugging at the purse strings,
Leaving an ulcer of fear tearing through mainstream,
And the antidote can be seen through the eyes of a homecoming queen,
But instead of coordinating the Women’s Resource Center she’s president of the student body,
She believes all that’s been said about sustainability,
Peace, harmony, all she’ll preach in her valedictorian speech,
Soon she wonders why true honor can’t come with more than just prestige,
There’s still tasers in schools, racism in class, everyone speaks round robin like drama kings…

We need a second hand smoke detector,
We need a fear and prejudice inspector,
There’s just too much smoke in the air,
Love is the sensor that shows us we care…
We need a second hand smoke detector,
We need a fear and prejudice inspector,
There’s just too much smoke in the air,
Love is the sensor that shows us we care…

We’ve got government officials high up in the office,
Taking it on the chin more than taking on the premise,
Shadows of heat reel on, soon enough it’s the final notice,
They just can’t set the norms, it’s all just opportunity in crisis,
Makes me wonder if they’ve ever cleaned their own backyard,
Or see the mess for themselves and imagine how it’d be if their family was torn apart,
Were these the same fathers who taught their children not to fight,
To have an understanding of each other and have a healthy respect for every life,
We try to teach our kids no bullying, then we forcefully raise our hand,
And they allow such senseless killings progressing all throughout the land,
Instead of picking the next great leader, we pick the arriviste,
Nominate the apprentice for short-term profit and then be returned to the streets,
Why must we be governed with effrontery, animosity, debauchery,
Why must we burn bridges in order to approach society,
The voice of God is not a weapon, it’s the dulcimer in the olive tree,
Humming a simple plea for humanity, a simple plea for harmony…

We need a second hand smoke detector,
We need a fear and prejudice inspector,
There’s just too much smoke in the air,
Love is the sensor that shows us we care…
We need a second hand smoke detector,
We need a fear and prejudice inspector,
There’s just too much smoke in the air,
Love is the sensor that shows us we care…

There was before and then there was after,
Why must the after always come during “during”,
Everything moves too fast in the after, yet we run with blisters,
Before was then, but after is now, so what happens next, could you tell me?
The world needs a hug, why can’t we stop for a moment,
Maybe if we be patient, maybe if we can be a little more open,
We can make out the gentle cry of the lamb in shortwave reception,
End this Spin Cycle 101 laundry service and love all we’re with…

Let’s put away all these cuprofen tablets,
Let’s live free of all these dietary supplements,
Set up a little prairie campfire in your heart and stay after hours,
Twirl a lasso of smiles to your friends like Pop Wagner,
Protesters, let us respect what the police officers do to serve and protect the public,
Police, let’s respect the protesters freedom of speech and their right to profess,
There’s nothing to be afraid of, making our voices heard is all we’re trying to do,
Oooooohhh, and by the way let me tell you...

"You’re sexy, you’re cute,
Take off that riot suit!
You’re sexy, you’re cute,
Take off that riot suit!
You’re sexy, you’re cute,
Take off that riot suit!
You’re sexy, you’re cute,
Take off that riot suit!"
Wooooooo!

We need a second hand smoke detector,
We need a fear and prejudice inspector,
There’s just too much smoke in the air,
Love is the sensor that shows us we care…
We need a second hand smoke detector,
We need a fear and prejudice inspector,

Hey, you want me to repeat something,
Erica Jong thought was really subversive!
She once said,
"love is everything it's cracked up to be,
that's why people are so cynical about it."
and, you know,
I’ve hurt, I’ve fallen,
I’ve got blisters striving for it in the process,
But it’s really worth it,
It is worth the risk.
And you know what else she said,
She said,
"the trouble is,
if you don't risk anything,
you risk even more."
So, what do you say,
You want it to give it another go,
Do it for love!
Risk everything for love!
Yay, c'mon, let's go,
let's do it for love!

"You’re sexy, you’re cute,
Take off that riot suit!
You’re sexy, you’re cute,
Take off that riot suit!
You’re sexy, you’re cute,
Take off that riot suit!
You’re sexy, you’re cute,
Take off that riot suit!"
Wooooooo!

(Let'd disable this gadget we call fear,
this gadget of mass destruction,
and embrace and live for today,
live in a light of hope and promise!
The people have the power,
and with this power,
you can change the world,
and no one can take that power away from you, yeah!)
Wooooo!

"You'll find something that's enough to keep you
But if the bright lights don't receive you
You should turn yourself around and come back home" MB20

Hi, Noah! Dear socially responsible and caring Angel Boy! I nominate you as the world's second hand smoke detector and fear and prejudice inspector!

May love eradicate all fear!

Love, Light, Peace & Harmony,
Linda
