Hiding safely in the olive branches,
out of sight and out of reach.
That's where I found sanctuary as a child.
And that's where I find it today,
though the olive trees are in my mind.
We were allowed to be kids then,
and we always fought bravely in
"The Olive Wars."
Sometimes we would shoot those
little olives at each other, nature's little bullets.
They hit hard and fast if your aim was good.
I usually won those battles decisively,
being the smallest, the fastest, and the best
tree climber in the neighborhood.

I always knew there was something special
about those sheltering olive branches.
No matter how far out on a limb I went,
they would hold me up, keep me safe.
Only once do I remember falling,
and that was because I let go.

In my dreams I still cling
to those nurturing, giving branches,
for much the same reasons now.
Some days they are the only thing that offers
a sense of security, a sense of hope.

As for those Olive Wars?
I discovered at a tender age
they are not very much fun,
for someone always got hurt,
and the wars made such a terrible mess
of our home.

Aha, Kacy...the lessons of the young
stay with us until we are quite old...

and yet, the young will always reach
not only for the olives in their youth,
but the olive branches in their age.

Well done, m'friend.

Excellent!

Beautiful, dear Kacy! The olive trees have enlightened you, even though you started playfully.

I enjoyed the link. There are people who can co-exist. May this example, as many others, show the way.
Love, Margherita

wonderful tale here, my friend...loved it.

Enjoyed it too...we had an olive tree...never got big enough to climb in though, and the olives were awful.

Again...enjoyed this much.

Oh, how I can relate!
It was crab apple trees and a willow for me
and brothers or neighbors for "enemies".
What we have to unlearn from childhood . . .

We are a species that survived by the paradox of war.  We may hope and pray for the future, but to reach it we must survive the present.

sag, thanks for replying
yes, much to learn, much more perhaps to unlearn

icebox,thanks for commenting
we have to find a better way to acknowledge  our differences and solve problems, nothing short of the survival of this (and I believe all other) species is at stake

Now this definitely gives us some food for thought.  I enjoy reading your works and most often than not, there is a learning message in there and it is easy to tell when something holds a passion to you in your words.  This one screams it.  Much enjoyed.
