The wiper squeak gritting on her nerves,
blurring the darkness ahead on a darkened
two lane black-top road to nowhere.

Three miles back...life changing so swiftly
in those moments after the door closed and
death sat next to her.  She could smell the
cheap wine, the stale cigarette odor, even
the smell of his stained underwear.

She could feel his eyes piercing her, taking
in every inch of her delicate frame.  Her
heart pounding, ceaselessly pounding.  A
scream wanting to come out.  She feared,
she feared greatly she might not see the
next three miles.

Some said this road was Death’s driveway.
Other’s said it was Hell’s front porch.  Only
the swing, the swaying lantern, the smoke
from a chimney were missing...or, were
they?

The screech of tires on gravel bringing them
suddenly to a stop as the yellow and black
sign pointed ominously to the right, the
yellow lantern blinking repeatedly, eerily
silent, but hugely stark on her face as
droplet shadows stained her mascara and
fear drained the last bits of a smile.

This right turn swelled a scream within her,
as gravity shifted their weight and brought
his hip against her own....the tenseness of
her muscles aching against the nauseous
feel of him....

It was his hands that she feared most, for
the sight of them brought a deep drawing
of breath, she dared not tell of what she
saw...no man could be like this man, no man.

And even more startling to her....the porch
reflecting in her headlamps, the lantern,
the wisps of smoke from a chimney that had
not seen fire in decades...there standing before
her was all this...and beside her, the orange
glow of Death’s eyes glared, telling her
that this was home, and she....as her door
opened....allowing the brisk chill of a still
eve to caress her...she was their guest of
honor...for a dinner yet to be baked and
served...

Hey Magnus...OMG! This is fantastic. Where the heck is everyone finding their inspiration because I sure am reading a heck of a lot of good poetry this morning. Loved it!

I love it when you write with this flavor, this style - and the feel of this, my goodness, Barry - goose bumps!  Ooooh, that closing - shivers!  This is great!

Hugs you -   Susan
