Heathrow Airport has a shop
Crammed with duty free
Toffees for Nancy, whisky for Laur
For John some HBC

Why don't they remind you as you browse
With so many choices to make
That although there's plenty on offer
There's a limit to what you can take?

With my carry-on (now more a drag-on)
Stowed above my seat
The air hostess gave me a customs form
She said I should complete

I'd three full litres of alcohol
In case and carry-on
But read with ever-increasing dread
That I only should have one

I struggled through Toronto Pearson
Incriminating form in hand
To meet up with my suitcase
And declare my contraband

I looked for 'items to declare'
- I'm an honest soul, aren't you?
But everyone else just stood in line
So I meekly joined the queue

My turn was coming nearer
As they slowly checked each card
And when I handed mine to them
They looked at me quite hard

They double-checked my confession
Of guilt, then waved me by
With a grunt and a sigh and a look that said
They'd bigger fish to fry

Well, Nancy loved her toffees
And John his HBC
And Laur deserved his whisky
He and Barb were good to me

But if I return I'll be forewarned
- If they'd opened my bags, woe betide me!
I'll still bring along my British good cheer
Only this time I'll stash it inside me.

Thanks a lot.

The last line should read

Only next time I'll stash IT inside me.

Apologies.  (I get my new glasses tomorrow.)

Mary!  You never told me about this happening!
Oh my...and I wondered how you were producing these goodies from what seemed like 'thin air'
Thought perhaps you had learned a few tricks I didn't know yet.
My gosh woman..I could have had to bail you out of jail!
Cute write though and had me laughing.

Toerag.

No, it was Scottish whisky.   I might not drink it but I can spell it!

So you speak English? Must be nice to have such an education. (I'll bet if you had a few sips of that aged brew you couldn't spell it or type it!!!) LOL

I enjoyed reading about your exploits with Canada Customs!  It's always an adventure dealing with that agency. I'm glad you managed to get all the contraband into the country.  ( I checked the Webster dictionary and you can spell whisky with an "e" (whiskey). No matter how you spell it, one should never spill it!!)

It's a devil when you are honest but try not to come into Heathrow when a Jamican flight is due in.

The Customs are lined up on the nothing to declare.

I liked the words and I can picture the same as you have.

Hi Mary ... A giggle from a person who has done the same thing many times!

A delightful read.  Hugs, Marti

Thank you very much for being kind about my humble offering.   I do so envy those of you who can write deeply and from the heart.
Maybe one day......

Mary,  I think we all can write deeply from
our heart, it is just a matter of how much
we want to share.

This poem is very cute,  brought back memories
of times when I went through customs,  always
nervous about the baggage check...and lucky
me,  I never had to stash the goods inside
me...whewwww!

Well, I do declare that you delighted me with this poetic and humorous treat!

I really enjoy hearing real life stories put to verse. I'm like you! Honest as a babe! I cannot do anything that is not above board without it showing on my face and my ending up being caught. I cannot get away with anything! ~ I mean anything! lol

You cracked me up with your ending! Winky

Linda
