I was one, the last drop that dripped,
standing alone in the back.  Singing
off key to the tune of a funeral march
on a cold November’s day.

Cracks did break Mother’s back and
tweedle dee looked at tweedle dum
in the mirror that had six years of life
left before the crack split a personality
and suddenly...I wasn’t.

Chickens were often born then, in Spring
after the thaw of love’s wish, when a
breath fogged the mirror and a vision
briefly smiled...wondering...

What does a man do when the boy of him
struggles and stumbles still, wrapped in
a cloak of brief maturity and sagacious
thought?  When rains fall on the pain of
middle age and the light comes on at
Motel Six, or was it Best Western?

Now...the drips have ceased, the hairline
has won the race and feet miss a crack
on occasion...sprightly dancing over
them, the only dance partner whose
toes don’t hurt...but....in spite of all
that, silk does feel soft to the touch
and words still move....to a two step
in solitaire.

You were, indeed.  Magnus...
this is one of your best heart offerings,
Ever.

Frame it.

Your kids will thank you.

One appropriate comment to this: Wow!

You absolutely captured this one, painful as it is to think about....it's easier to think through words like these.

Barry - this is fantastic - aching yet able to laugh - my heart over flows - would give you a big hug right now if I could - you are such a gifted poet -
