Not in Audubon style
...dedicated to the 5th avenue wildlife....
and to Charles Kennedy, RIP, naturalist, poet, vegetarian, friend of the red tails*

Beneath the pomp and circumstance
voyeurs did watch the playful antics
of a capriciously cavorting couple,
flirting and mating openly
‘neath wealthy high rise cornice.

Palemale and First Love, red tailed hawks
that captured the hearts and binoculars
of once stereotyped jaded New Yorkers,

when upon a high rent apartment ledge
these red hawks did build a cozy nest,
and were protected by law and human consent
to the delight of hundreds of city visitors
who gathered daily in Central Park
to bear witness to the miracle of life.

Survival in the city was never guaranteed
for this pair and their offspring,
any more than it is for other two leggeds,
but three red tail hawk nestlings soon
emerged from this nest to conquer the odds.

And everyone did celebrate

Life.

And against all odds, the red tailed hawks
remain in this bustling city today,
gifting all the city dwellers
a natural high.

I'd say even Mr. Audubon
would smile in approval.

I remember this story Kacy!
Thanks for bringing us up to date.
I'm so pleased, as may bird lovers will be, to know all is well with our feathered friends, in the big city.
Hugs~

Ah Kacy...I remember this story!  I remember following it...knowing as we do that nature overtakes everything, given time...[see the dandelions growing through the concrete seams?  See the abandoned blacktop runways on airstrips breaking apart from the forces of nature, and grasses return ]...

Much later in time, I was in Lawrence, Kansas, along the river, where some of my friends were doing their "thing" while I was at the window that overlooked the river...

and what did I see?

"Oh my ..."

"What?  Are you ok?"

"Look...look!  Oh, gads...does someone have some binoculars?"  [Silly question, I know...]

And there "they" were.  Two golden eagles.  Surveying the river line as if they were visitors...and they were.  The next day the Lawrence/Topeka papers were front-page headlining the return of Golden Eagles....

I believe I will never forget the rush of that moment....

Thank you for this.

My dear, you are more than welcome. It IS a rush, to see nature flying high and free. *sigh*
I saw lots of eagles while in Haines, Alaska, and see hawks fairly often hovering over the fields here in Oregon. But I've got to admit, to see one survive the skyline of New York City must be a total RUSH!

Now the green Willamette Valley is the pride of Oregon.
Where the Red Tails soar in splendor from dawn to setting son.
You may see them on a perch somewhere wondering at the cars
But I see them 'gainst the skylight, for me, they are daytime stars.

Beautiful write, Kacy and one of my favorite birds.  Ken

Through rubble and trouble and dark of night
The yawn of a dawn will hasten the light

Paul, thank you so much!

Ken, thank you, and that is a delightful write! I figured you'd been seeing our Oregon red tail hawks. I had one swoop right in front of me last week on the farm road, and watched him carry off some small prey, a field mouse no doubt.
