"To Those Who Go Down To The Sea In Ships"

The flashing sun shone from the eastern sky
As winking lights blazed from the
strafing planes.
Heaving and bucking in surging seas,
the vessels below rolled as men burned
in flaming oil.
Torpedo bombers dropped their deadly cargo
as warships wallowed helplessly, then sank,
entombing crews.

The monument to battle loss stands astride
a sunken hero, proclaiming the price of
vigilance lacking.
May these men and ships always live in
our minds, for they gave ”the last full measure
of devotion."

(Author’s note: After December 7th, 1941, US military efforts in the Pacific were largely borne by US submarines, which were present at Pearl Harbor, but not attacked.  In the 1960s, I served on submarines.  I remain fiercely proud of those years. Ken)

Well done KJ,  I was at Pearl Harbor on Dec.
6th three years ago...It was a memorable experience...I will try to find what I wrote as a tribute to all of those brave men that lived through those moments on that day.

FYI,  I too was a bubblehead,  1967 to 1992.
Proud of it...would not have it any other way.

Many thanks, dear friends, for sharing this day of honor with me.  We'll not see the end of conflict in our lifetimes, but we may not forget those who defend us.

I will never forget standing on the Arizona Memorial, which is a giant symbol made in the form of a Torii sunk low, for those who have eyes to see it, the entrance to OUR shrine now....standing, belly deep, across that great sunken presence that is a grave.....every minute or so, even after more than sixty years, a drop of oil would escape to leave a sad little rainbow on the surface.....

Several small parties of Japanese tourists were there that day....they seemed humble beyond words at the sight of what their grandfathers had done.

One of them, a young man, stood at the rail and wept. I could speculate why, but I'll never know.
