The day began here with a growl,
garbage truck at dawn howling in protest
at another load
of human cast off waste
and broken dreams.
School bus brake screams,
months past its service date;
I guess the company decided
brakes can wait,
after all
how much can those little kids weigh
anyway?
Today I wish for joy
for friends whose burdens weigh them down.
Today I wish my eyes would heal faster
so I don’t just sit around and feel them itch.
I shouldn’t bitch I suppose
“God only knows” the saying goes;
who will live to count the lilies in the fields
when Spring’s soft breath
again flows through the world.

And so I wish joy for you today.  I always awake with the birds so I guess I can consider myself fortunate. The garbage comes later ... when I start thinking.

It's hard for a man, to say these things....and when we say them the images are often hard as well but when they are handled with the light touch their sharp edges demand, they make the meaning even more poignant.

profound, indeed...and these lines certainly
added a lot of umphh to it all:

who will live to count the lilies in the fields
when Spring’s soft breath
again flows through the world.

SERVICES

There was a man in the land of Ur.

Who’s that at my coattails?
A pale cocksman.

Hush!
the rabbi walks in thought
as in an ordained measure
to the Ark
and slowly opens its great doors.
The congregation rises
and faces the six torahs
and the covenant
and all beyond.
The Ark glows.

Hear, O Israel!

The rabbi stands before the light
inside, alone, and prays.
It is a modest prayer
for the responsibilities of his office.
The congregation is silent.

I too pray:
Let Leah my wife be recompensed for her sweet smile
and our many years of companionship
and not stick me when she cuts my hair.
And let her stay at my side at large gatherings.
And let my son George and his wife Leanna
and my daughter Barbara be close,
and let their children, Jennifer, Julie and Joanna
be my sheep
and I their old shepherd.
Let them remain as they are.

And let not my white hair frighten me.

The tiger leaps,
the baboon cries,
Pity, pity.
The rabbi prays.

There was a man in the land of Ur.

I, son of Leopold and Flora,
also pray:
I pray for meaning,
I pray for the physical,
for my soul needs no suppliant.
I pray for man.

and may a special providence look out
for those who feel deeply.

Absolutely love this ice-man

and I am haunted
by my illicit exquisite dream
but I can't really wake up
so I just drift in between
