Listening to every heart

Seasons, Legends Swirl – Part 3

So it came to me while deep in green
That soft breezes meant for me
Were simply voices waiting to speak
Tickling quiet in hushed harmony.

The road was humming with tire marks
That rain had washed away
All things that once were here,
Like legends, find their stay
And as deep as the roots dig into earth
So deep too should legends be.

Where once my thoughts had strayed to clouds
They’re now rooted in rock and clay…

For who would tell where the tree should grow
As its roots cling to Flint Hills rock,
Or that Minerva would give us the olive tree;
While Neptune would honor the pine;
Or that a willow would hold to femininity,
While the walnut kills growth of all kind…

Around and around me the legends swirled
Each seasoned with stories and more.

That the yew would predate all of life,
Poisonous for all but the berry’s skin;
While elm gives the fairies a place to sit,
And Zeus gave the fir it’s evergreen;
We hold to maples for their success,
And the oak still stands as a king.

Oh there is more, so much more I would know
Of seasons and time, and how your heart holds,
Perhaps the river will offer another view,
If I could find a paddle, and canoe…and you…

See how through all the legends swirl,
through seasons in which we roam,
See how through all the trees gave life,
then thinned, to hold gently this poem.

Your pen has the grace of a willow.
