You know I love it
When you talk history to me
Obscure knowledge flowing
Living upon your silvered tongue
Resurrecting the once dead
To parade about in exhibition
Honorable deeds done
Unspeakable terrors wrought
Passions pursued
You give them breath
Lending voice to their stories
Gifting beat to their hearts once more
They no longer seem to be
Dried ink upon aged paper
Cracked and peeling
Forgotten
Speak to me some more.

s.a.t.

For a dear friend, who indeed does make the past speak.  And I am a bit of a history junkie.

Susan, this speaks to me....I am not a history buff but I like it and now and then it does speak to me.  I'll see what I can do in the next few weeks.  I'll listen and see if I hear any more voices.....lovely writing as always.........jo

I join Iliana in your wish
that the poet to whom you speak
would write more of those times.

I know...

as I have a passion for history, as well...

Jo, look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Sunshine, I'm glad I've such good company.

Marcel, it is a delight.  Funny, when I see the elderly, I see in my minds eye their youth and the history they were part of creating.  Weird, huh, to think we are each a piece of what will one day be considered history.

Hugs all -- susan

IF only we would take the time to sit in
that swing on an old porch,  sharing a glass
of lemonade or a fresh cup of coffee...
as we listen to the stories of their times,
their hardships...what made them laugh or
cry...fascinating...timeless.

Yes,  history...where would we be without
it.

Thank You Susan!

Barry,

Oh yes.  I grew up with stories.  Grandparents who went through WWI and the great depression, parents who were raised in depression era, and met at a USO dance during WWII.  The stories they told, oh my, I would sit entrhalled.  Sadly, being bonr so late to older parents, my story tellers are all passing on . . . but at least I have the memories of the stories told.  Can you imagine seeing life pass from horse to car to plane to space ship?  Wow!

Susan, yes...I can imagine it...have
imagined it....and though I am still
relatively young,  have experienced some
of it....it is fascinating, isn't it....

Barry

and I remember sitting in the living room,
on the floor....listening to all of the
older folk talk about past times,  so adept
at remembering so much detail...being able
to remember names that they had not spoken
of in 40 or 50 years,  or more....Yes, very
fascinating...

When the screen was simply black or white
and radios still told stories.  When milk
came in glass bottles,  so cold and fresh.
When ice cream was in a small cardboard cup
and you ate it with a wooden spoon...and
the barber seldom used anything except
scissors...and grown men shaved with straight
razors...

When locomotives moved through the night
air,  the rumbling of diesel engines taking
a small boy to dreams...dreams of times
that have turned to dust...except in the
minds of those who hunger to know.

More, more!   I jest not.  I love your reply.  I loved your poem written in response.  You do weave words well.

Fear not,  I shall weave you a story...let the imagination run wild....glad you enjoy.
I do as well...such fascinating times.

Thanx Susan....

Think of how it was...the first person to
cross the great Mississippi,  headed into
a setting sun...when the air was clean,
there were no contrails streaking the skies
and lye soap was freshly made each week...
as a washboard and a bucket of clean water
made the laundry fresh...  Gosh,  you will
have me going on into infinity....

I am a history nut too...Emphasis on the 'nut'. *S*
I liked the way you put these words down about my favorite subject.
