Heading south, we floated like a ghost on wheels,
roller-coasting over back roads of the Cumberland Plateau.
Soon, the morning sun began its slow burn of cotton fog,
clinging tight to sleepy lowlands.
Stalks of corn waved like golden, magic wands
over an endless sea of rolling hills.
And deep, firey thickets of oak, hickory and maple
posed as mysterious forms rising from the deep.

Just then a faint aroma opened a flood gate of memories:
bacon on the fry,
Grannies biscuits,
fresh cut tomatoes,
the first bite of a tree picked green apple,
the canning cellar and smokehouse,
and the horse stable after an evening rain.
I could her voice too...Grannies -
sweet as molasses and rich as the land
she called home for near ninety years.
I hear, "come on you'ins, time fer dinner",
and again, as clear as day,
"Amazing grace, how sweet the sound...".

And now, the crunching of tires against the gravel road
leading up the hill to a gathering of cold stone
and to family, huddled.

There are few things in this life that can heal us now,
but to hear her voice, just one more time...that would do.

Yes, I know this longing - well expressed.

Robert

It's wonderful, how many things bring back a loved one, as if they were really there.  This was beautiful in it's senserity and loving memory.
