Afraid of the Dark

Welcome to the free world
I wouldn't rejoice just yet
look around you, it's all unfurled
everyone's placing their bets
in this world of lost cause
in this world of impending fear
we're painting over the flaws
with every whisper in our ears
with everything we hold dear
we remain afraid of the dark
blackness swallowing our hearts
grace and beauty sink like a stone
compassion a pile of polished bone
you keep under your pillow at night
huddled in your fright
afraid of the dark
afraid of the dogs of hell
they bite and they bark
you tripped and you fell
you get up, you get hard
and go through it all again
through the black angry rain
falling, calling to you

So welcome to the free world
did we disappoint you
a life away from the third world
a life asleep without a clue
but afraid of the dark
blackness swallowing our hearts
peace and understanding sink like a stone
to make it better or make it alone
our hearts under our pillows at night
huddled in our fright
afraid of the dark
afraid of the rising flames
they burn and they spark
you cry and you lay blame
on your god to save you
can't you just save yourself
falling headlong into the blue

Darkness in the free world
we let it lead us
away from what frees us
a home, a love for a girl
or whatever you hold dear
in the night wet with fear
afaid of the dark
looking for the light in our hearts
love and happiness sink like a stone
will you make it better all alone
our hearts under the gun
hidden from the sun
and afraid of the dark
afraid and we pray
we fight, we leave our mark
on the world today
till the breath of life
lay in ruin, lay in strife
begging for sweet release

Please

But we remain afraid
afraid of the dark
afraid of the world
afraid of the life we lead
the life we leave
on earth, as it isn't heaven
as it isn't clear
in the black bitter rain
searching for a little light
to come creeping in
in this darkness
we call home.

You can be afraid of the dark, or you can turn on a light   This is a very passionate piece and it speaks much truth.  But I do believe that we each carry a light within us that can illuminate the dark and bring comfort and love to the forefront, as well as compassion.  It is said "Let thy light so shine" or some such quote.  And if each person would turn on the light, the darkness would fade, perhaps even enveloping the boogie men so that they can be seen for what they are.

Enjoyed this read.

At least in the free world Genocide is not as easily carried out.  Let's love our children and teach them to love, and break the cycle.

Happiness isn't something that happens to you, it's created from within you.  Joy is a state of mind.

A well done dark look at extreme change.  I would like to beleive that here in this free world all one has to do is but flick a switch on inside of them and see the light, follow it, and indeed seek its warming. Freedom and living in fear is not freedom, but slavery.

Thanks to everyone who commented... I know this was almost overwhelmingly dark in tone, but I wrote the bulk of it when I was pissed off, mainly from the bigotry, warmongering and polluting that the morons in charge of this country spread like wildfire. The last half or so of this poem I completed yesterday, and I was in a bit of a better mood. I was a little uncertain about posting it here; usually I'm pretty optimistic about things, but this concentrates soley on darkness. I now wish I'd included a little more of my own optimism. C'est la vie.

As long as there is a little light there will always be hope.
