Why I Call You Beautiful

You asked why I call you beautiful;
if there’s an explanation it is this:
when you can’t see your shoes
drag slots into the snow,
yet the fruited wind sings to you
with the scent of opening flowers,
when this blackchar hillside brings
the chuff of squirrels chasing
along the pine boughs,
when you look at me and see
the man I could have been
among the many men I am;
only then will you understand
the nature of my love for you,
and when you understand my love
you will find you already knew.
