Plea from the Departed

Grief is inevitable

You cannot slide
From heaven’s door
To gates of hell
Without acquiring
An unwanted passenger
Not just along for the ride
But anxious to dictate
Each breath you take

Don’t let it destroy
Your ability to experience joy

The memories of what was
And knowing it won’t be again
Give you claim on sorrow
But please don’t let
The keen of pain
Become your theme song
That is not a fitting honor
To the melody that was ours

Whatever you do
Don’t let grief define you

It is not forgetting me
To remember how to laugh
Saying farewell to mourning
May feel like losing me again
But I will never leave you
So let me watch you celebrate
The beauty that was us

Through your love for me
I will live on
If you can just
Let yourself live

I thought I had said all there was to say on grief....exhausted my muse's vocabulary...am glad yours took up the subject, for you voice it eloquently...and with dignity...
I know that grief sometimes screams in anguish, but when it is 'worn' in quiet dignity, thats when it speaks best of all

jellybeans: You know that your response has just given this one-track muse more ammo, don't you??? LOL

JM: How utterly lovely. *S*

Thank you both, so very much... It is fitting the two of you should respond first... you know both me and subject so well... Thank you! *S*

I have suddenly realized
that grief takes on
a physical form...
and not always necessarily in one's self...

well done, sweetheart.

I may have learned a little lesson or two today...

because of you.

Laura, this is masterful....this trio of poems has to be one of the best works I've seen in this site.

In the past you've shared with me the feeling that your poetry doesn't compare to that of the quality poets here.... Don't be saying that any more, Suthern gal -- you just proved you are one of them.

Ruth

Such wisdom in your words...I wish I had read this back in 1974 when Michelle died.  Thank you for posting it now though...it touches that place in me that needs it still.

That IS the most important part, to not let grief overtake our lives to the point where we no longer can experience joy. It's an easy trap to fall into, too, when the bony finger of reality pokes at our chests in the morning, when we awaken and remember why we're sad.

Lovely.

So very well done.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

PS: I'm glad it didn't disappoint. *S* Thank you so much! *S*

Seymour: Thank you very much, my friend... I'm glad you liked! *S*

Sunshine: It certainly seems to be a separate entity... of the cruel overseer variety. *S* Thank you!!

Sudhir, Enchantress, iliana: Thank you, my friends... it means a lot to me that you're reading the series. *S*

Ratleader: Thank you, oh king of cut and paste! LOL Seriously... I'm grateful. *S* I know you don't say those words lightly... I can't tell you what they mean to me. *S*

Martie: You couldn't have handed me a more lasting bouquet than that it touched a place that needed it... thank you so much!

Corinne: It's something I believe... even as I know how difficult it is to allow ourselves joy again... I hope that when my time comes I'm mourned... but even more, I hope I'm remembered with smiles. *S* Thank you so much!!

Larry: Thank you very much! *S*

Sadelite: That wasn't my intention, my friend. *S* But it moves me greatly that you found such meaning in my words. *S* Thank you!!

Midnitesun: Thank you so much! *S*

Marge: And I thank you for being my friend... it helps me be whatever it is I am. *S* Thank you!!!!

suthern,

Cannot responsd for I am only part way to reading 3 and 4 and perhaps more? I will hold my comments till I can spend more time thinking about each segment. They deserve the time for contemplation.

Thank you

I think moving beyond the point where grief is what defines you may even be harder then the grieving itself...
Love this.
