Trains

At night, the trains keep me awake.
The schedule never changes, once at 11:30
and again at 2:30. Mournful, longing sounds.
Mouths in black “O” shapes.

Locals say I’ll learn to love those signals,
and that one day, when I move away,
I won’t be able to sleep without them.

I am fond of steam trains on morning mountain trails
and I’ve ridden my share of trains in tunnels.

I remember the locomotive in Mexico
when we nearly lost my baby brother
because he got off at a stop in Calexico.

I can’t envision a time when I’ll pine
for that solitary wail in the dark.

Wonderful (and lonesome) write my friend - true about your baby brother?

Have RR tracks a few miles from me and the trains come through about the same times as your and at 3:30 in the mornings - far enough away I hear the whistle but not enough to bother me.

What I really miss, is the mornfulness of the Mississippi River boats - When they blew their whistles, especially late in the night when the geese would be flying over honking -
wow! your insides quivered.

Really enjoyed this.

I grew up hearing trains and small planes, and don't miss them one bit. LOL, losing a brother on vacation...I thought only my family did that!

it is a wonder how we do become accustomed to sounds...and how after awhile we don't  notice them unless they are gone.

Corinne~
I do know those night-train sounds~
Seems the engineers each have their own 'whistle rhythm'~

Now, after Titia came here by train, I ALWAYS think of her when I hear the night whistles~

Yes, I think perhaps I would miss that sound~

There are some train tracks close to where my parents live. They bought the house when I was in the 8th grade. The train sounds used to never bother me, when I was young. But now? I hate those sounds, especially the screeching when they are stopping or slowing down. It's like someone scratching on a chalk board with their fingernails. ewwww!!! LOL

You know, you take everyday things and give beauty and thought to them. I love your work, and over the years I've been reading you...your work has gotten simply amazing. I would buy your books.

Sitting here and hearing that lonesome whistle blow...if only in my mind.
Excellent write.
