Little Size 9’s

As I sit down on my chair,
Gazing down to the floor,
And see before my wondering eyes,
Two pair of shoes,
But only one of them is mine.

Of course mine are the larger ones,
Looking exhausted, sullen and down,
And if that tongue could talk,
I just wonder what it would say……?

Two steps to the side and one step back,
Are the little size 9’s,
Looking all battered and bruised,
But flowing with the energy, power and vigour,
Of the innocent child asleep in his bed,
Dreaming dreams that only he will know.

But in my dreams,
I follow them little size 9’s,
As they grow and age,
I watch them as the red fades to pink,
And the pink becomes white,
As time passes me by.

In my dreams,
It’s me who has chosen
The path of which they’ll lead.
Decided the ending
Before he’s even had time to begin.
But that’s not the way it will be.
It’s not for him to live by my dreams,
But for him to live by his.

So now as I look down,
To the rug that adorns my floor.
There’s one pair of red,
And one pair of white.
Nothing in this world is as important to me,
As to where those little size 9’s,
Will take my little sized man.

I have my son's little shoes packed away in my cedar chest. One pair red velvet with white fluff, one pair brown work shoes so tiny a pait of tiny tennis shoes. Now my little boy is a size 11. I show him what he wore as a baby and he just shakes his head.
Good one
