Unlock The Deep

Late last night
I walked the cold stairs,
attic searching for memories.
Those packed to lock the hurt away,
when I lost you...Once
"my one and only."

From my teenage years, I fell for you.
Strength walking, was how I described you.
Someone to hold me up when I was down
and ever since, I kept you trunked,
hoping one day to golden year reminisce.

There inside I found my senior autograph book
and a piece of paper inside.
My handwriting almost unrecognizable
except for the "Mrs. Peter Scully"
scribbled one hundred times
in even lines and rows,
as we so often did  during moments
of teenage wishing.

A pack of letters from Vietnam, ribboned
and edged in red white and blue...envelopes crispy.
Their touch a pleasurable ache.
A dried flower from a walk in the park,
sealed in plastic, now...crumbling brown.

A photo, when I caught you guarding,
not noticing me across the water,
nose white with zinc oxide and a reddened face.

There inside, my dreams of you.
Some you have never seen
and some I can't yet bare to part with.

Beatles albums, napkin notes,
45's all touched by you, as I finger them,
careful of their fragility.

A photo of Dave, and one of Bob
both gone now.
Probably a bit of you left this earth
along with each of them.

I have no regrets.

Although not from my childhood as such,
the enclosed were from a time
of childlike innocence,
saved for you, hoping that time
would have kept us this way forever.

There will only be one true love in my life
and one trunk to hold the memories.

I should have had you climb these stairs
when they were warmer and let you unlock
the deep from inside.

M

with over 30 years that trunk is overflowing..I could have gone on forever..but figured who wants to know all that stuff anyway.. *s

Thanks for reading..now to see if all those memories will fit back into the trunk without me having to sit on it.

I love this Maureen..
I was hoping it would go on forever...
I remember a lot of the things you have in your trunk as well.

"Those packed to lock the hurt away"

what a magnificent line

"There will only be one true love in my life
and one trunk to hold the memories."

such a wonderful way to meld the thoughts to the words...can't say enough good things about this one.

Very much enjoyed this...aren't memories sometimes a double edged sword?
