A tribal winter before a peaceful snow spell
Buffalo on the plains huddled in the masses
Falling feathers from heavens sky dwell
On the land shadowing flakes upon its grasses

A serene peace fills the Cherokee village
As children search for wood to feed the fires pillage
A quiet meadow ice capped in crystal serene
Lay ghostly still before the blue dusk dream

The vision dissipates before me to the awakening morning sun
Before the trembling charge of the buffalos at run
I cast my sight through my window before the charging pledge
But I see no buffalo from the second story window ledge

I see a village of concrete riddled caves
And goliath steeds with men inside its cage
I cannot hear the wolf’s peak howl
I instead hear sirens amidst smoke stacked clouds

I see no tribal masses gathered to pray for a blessed day
Just a people in fear locked behind rocks of sand and clay.
It empties my heart to see that there was no feather of peace
And that the Cherokee village is now gone along with the sacred beast

So true and disturbing... Your poem was excellent in thought and depiction.  I enjoyed it, though sad.

Jeff,

You know I could not pass this up, having indian blood running through my veins.

Your descriptions and views captured me and held me inside the arms of your poetic story.

I can always count on reading you and expecting nothing but the best in poetry!

(tears fall down my cheeks) Being of Cherokee descent, and having the blood nin my veins, it breaks my heart knowing of the painful truth of my people and many other brother and sister tribes, dearest friend, it breaks my heart especially to know many actually believed what one at the Pratt School said, saying "You kill the Indian to save the man!" (wipes tears) That is depressing how the foreigners just couldn't get along with them and respect their land and rights and now individualism and dispossession of land under such infamous acts like the Dawes Act and all Andrew Jackson did has seperated our tribe! (sad sigh) I pray the children of tomorrow will continue the fight to bring the traditions and values of our culture back to the people and those who learn of our culture will do so not from the textbooks who claim in Chapter 1 American Indian history has diminished and is no longer important but from the native people themselves, God Bless You, you have a most compassionate heart for my people, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Jeff, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton
