If love were an orange, deliciously ripe,
I'm certain the fruit flies would leave me the rind.
The maggots are only one half of my gripe--
Love in itself has been frying my mind.
None of its rules have been clearly defined;
The system of scoring is rarely the same.
Swing on ahead--you can leave me behind.
I'm hating the players and hating the game.

Though everyone hurts (if you trust Michael Stipe),
There's some hurting more than all others combined.
This soldier's been working too long for his stripe;
I doubt it would come if the planets aligned.
I've wooed as a rebel; I've acted refined--
My every result was exactly the same.
Love's rather dumb, in addtion to blind--
I'm hating the players and hating the game.

Poets and playwrights are helping the hype,
Writing of damsels who fretted and pined,
Waiting around for a Romeo type
To sweep them away from a perilous bind.
Those aren't the women with whom I have dined,
And I'm not Adonis of mythical fame!
We're far from the world all those authors designed--
I'm hating the players and hating the game.

(L'envoi)
Lovers and losers are two of a kind;
Romance and folly are one and the same.
I'm sick of this business; it's time I resigned--
I'm hating the players and hating the game.

Lovers and losers are two of a kind;
Romance and folly are one and the same.

I must disagree with these lines. I have been hurt by love and also called a fool... a loser....and come out in the end a winner..while the naysayers drown in their own lonely tears.
But, you have written your thoughts well and I enjoyed reading them. Chris

Just thought I'd remind everyone that the lines I write aren't always from my perspective.

I liked your message - and if everyone would quit buying into the media etc. and be themselves I think we might actually get somewhere! Nice approach to an age old problem on this one.
