In an upside-down garden

Somewhere in the midst of laughter
drifting with the solemn promise of better days
she lost her way and forgot
all of her obligations, and the lies
that she once spoke to you
do they still matter now?
It was too hard to love and too easy
to just let it all get away,
she opted for a different one,
a different road, the harder route.

She had no insurance,
there was no guarantee,
there wasn't a way to tell what the outcome
would be, why wouldn't she
have taken the easy way out with you?
Why did she lie and say
she could love you
then when it came down to it
she was sorry, she didn't mean to
but she loved him instead.

And it hurts, sometimes,
when she can never tell,
when she doesn't know what he thinks,
why he says the things he does,
why he concentrates so hard to make
the smallest little things important
to her, to make her smile,
to make the world seem better to her.
Why does he try so hard?
Hasn't he realized it's easy, she's easy.

You knew that all you had to do
was tell her that you loved her.
"Really?" she whispered, scared still,
but this was a little better, this was security.
You claim to love her, you claim that
you have never loved anyone as much as you love her,
but that's just too bad
she doesn't feel the same, anymore,
she won't consider this aspect anymore.
She loves someone else.
