Walk With Me – Faces of the White City

Merida streets are narrow, reminding me
of a brief visit to the French Quarter.
Never sure if Konrad was in
front of me or behind me,
his face never really seen,
only in my mind, but still, a proffered
invisible hand behind me
to hurry out of traffic,

on to the next site with/in/sight…

our guide is one with his White City,
his community, talking artistically
with hands articulate,
a bird in flight, a butterfly in touch,
revealing books of knowledge
via his own history,
and when he did not know an answer,
he would inquire in a language
that danced in the air,
so we would then know,
this, or that.

After several visits from
here to there, the Governor’s palace,
a museum, while Konrad whispered
feel the cobble through your shoes,
we were guided to a Franciscan Church,
as a hush silenced our steps
for a funeral was alive, to allow a fleeting of a face
we had never laid eyes on,
only realizing in this very moment,
a soul was in passing, as we stood on markers
in the back of the church, where names were carved,
ancestors of ancestors,
and life swung, in the flicker of an eye, unseen.

Doors away from the accepted poverty of one,
stood the Catholic church,
as opposite from its brethren as possible,
ornate and still under shadows of a
visit from Pope John Paul only a decade [blink] ago…
and here stood in strange, unseemly ways,
faces that the church would never want us
to notice, as if two eyes, a gaping awe
of the land’s natives were somehow
carved in a hidden way, visible only to
those in search…
and Konrad whispered
feel the eyes
and know that all forgiven souls
dance

The plaza beckoned tapping feet,
we walked stones and watched traffic,
we saw faces, and shook our head “no”
as displays of craft rewarded our sight;
we fended our say and plied our way through squares
and stood in timeless regard
of a White City
and its way with the rest
of the world.

Then Konrad spoke, again…

Do not turn your back, do not say goodbye.
although Later is acceptable `~
so blow a kiss to the green of your gaze,
to realize a return
in sunlit days
.

I nodded.

I had heard the promise of
another tomorrow.

Karilea, this is so beautiful. I love it all,
the pictures, the words, with Konrad talking to you,
all of it is beautiful, my friend.

And, SunshineyOne, I forgot to mention it yesterday,
but I love your beautiful new picture. You truly
are a bright ray of Sunshine...
Hugs,

Ethel

Hi Karilea, welcome back (hmmm...I think I missed your arrival!) It seems and looks as though you had a fantastic journey. Ah, the warmth of the sun to warm chilled mid-western bones.

May the warmth last all winter.

Such an elegant arrangement of art here Kari,
and this line took my breath away.

What a wonder you are my dear.

As I read this...I could see you, going about the city, in awe of all that you came upon, all the while feeling the anticipation of things to come, and hearing your muse...and always there was a smile on your face..and a spark in those green eyes........

Darn! Love this. I felt like I was there. The pictures and the words blend together so well I could see the city in my minds' eye. Wonderful piece Sunshine. Enjoyed this very much.
