in the shadows

It is cold tonight,
all the ghosts dragged out
for the holidays
will be kept close by
for the next few weeks
until they're tucked away,
snug again,
in the mixed wrappings
of others' cast off memories.

I'm sure,
each in our own way,
we all said again,
"Remember when...."
and laughed,
or cried,
or quietly denied
complicity in petty crimes
and misdemeanors;
the dead always
are larger than the living,
if you haven't recognized this
as the way of life
just wait long enough
and it will be your turn;
don't worry,
I'll go first
the jump is not so bad
once you get your mind around forever.

I would never want to bring you down,
after all,
it is the silly season once again
and half the planet needs
to brighten up the short dark days
of winter;
we are gathered here,
in this strange community,
so close and yet so far apart;
truly,
there's no other time in history
to this date,
when so many souls could merge
in thought and feeling
without dealing in the pragmatic,
the baser sides of life;
so many poets,
yet so few,
of course this cyber medium is new
and here we can get by
outnumbered in the world at large.

You know,
we are each of us a gatekeeper,
each in our own way in charge
of our own private door
to the time and space
of our own little corners of awareness,
and through each door
for a moment's chance,
we can dance and choose
to visit many worlds
we'd have otherwise not known.

I wish you all the best of times
and peace unto your hearts;
the future always is unknown,
and yet,
it always starts with each new breath
and each new dawn;
so let us drink
to absent friends and then
continue while we may,
to share our thoughts,
our feelings great and small,
and for the time you share with me
I simply want to thank you all.

Nicely done piece, I enjoyed your ease of pace, culminating with your appreciation.

Excellent piece.

Not yet, but if the chance comes I hope to.

For now, I'll just join in thanking you, as one of our best, for this.
